Starting Saturday 8/15 I'm going to see how much more outgoing and socially productive I can be by cutting out cyberslacking completely at home. I still will be online on the bus/waiting for buses and on breaks at work.

I expect to walk or bike around the beach nearly every day, be outside a lot more, a lot less physically and socially lazy and even read a book or 2, which I haven't done in a long time. Basically take full advantage of the 2 weeks until next semester with 3 free days and the time b4/after work to practice social skills and go out to try to meet people. I never kept track of how much time I spend online per week doing nothing important, but I'm guessing Ill be suprised how much more time I free up for everything else, especially my ongoing social experiment. operation-chaos-my-summer-starts-now-vt48883.html

You should try this if there any habit you have that's getting in the way of your progress..

If you consider it "cyberslacking" then you should just cut out the internet altogether

This is STUPID. so when your home, with nothing to do or nobody there you'll go on the net, BUT WHEN THERE ARE PEOPLE AROUND YOU COULD SOCIALISE WITH YOU GO ON THE NET??

Can you not see how that is quite counter productive?

^^ Point missed.

The point is to be outside more because I'm not spending as much time cyberslacking, which is what happens in the time between when you finish what u came online to do (study, check mail, watch news etc.), and turn off the internet. Much like tubing out or playing video games, neither of which I do.

99.5% of the time its just me alone at the bus stops and riding public transit. If I want to talk to someone just put it away and talk to them, its not like spending hours online at home when I could have been outside in a social environment.

I currently have no phone, internet, tv, bed etc etc and yar it makes you travel to use the internet and stops you wasting time but it is by no means a lifestyle quick fix. More a pain in the ass for people to get in touch

I know I would be more sociable if I didn't have the internet. But I just can't... I think I am addicted and I would be too unhappy without it.

But a holiday (vacation) is good for this, like if you have a week in another country, don't take your laptop or whatever. Go out and enjoy the sights, and meet people. It does you a lot of good, I always come back in a more outgoing mood (but also really missing the internet  ).

Personally I think the internet has ruined a lot of people's lives, people like me who grew up with it, and instead of going out with friends to do things just stay inside playing computer games with strangers over the internet. Before the internet existed, at least that sort of person would have been going round to a friend's house and playing in the same room, and developing some social skills and have close real friends. (yeah boo hoo I know, it's basically all my fault th mess I have made).

Experiment didn't work. After a few days I went in to cover a shift at work, resulting in a double shift with only two hours to sleep. I couldn't get to sleep anyways so just went online and used internet forums, read articles, listened to music and shit, and did some other stuff I need not mention. Remember the next few days afterwards I cyberslacked a lot too, just went right back into it. But I recovered, went outside and talked to girls... its alrite now.

I never had a computer with consistent internet until about 1.5 years ago, which I think is part of the reason I spend a lot of time here, because its like a portal to virtual infinity I didn't have at my fingertips until recently. People who grew up with computer and internet it became a balanced part of your life, except for geeks/nerds/hardcore gamers/pron addicts, etc, people who live in computers. And if you have an active social life and a lot going on, you don't get caught up in the interwebz. Not having a social life its easy to lose track of time and let myself become an e-Loner, further distancing myself from social improvement.

This was never a problem when I would have to go to the library and have a 2 hour limit on the internet. Still the advantages of being connected far outweigh the disadvantages. Online we can access the closest thing to the collective knowledge of humanity and keep in contact with hundreds of friends we may have lost had it not been for social networking sites. But as with anything fun and useful, it can turn into procrastination and overuse.

I went about this the wrong way by trying to fix the activity not the habit, which is a result of lacking moderation and not prioritizing. Internet use us good if its socially constructive, a boost to your life outside the internet not an escape into a virtual existence. I read in a book about socializing and internet use that it can become "the 5th wall" of your room without you realizing it. This is something I am avioding by logging off quicker and going outside more. Also very necessary now that I started community college again, more time needs to be set aside for studying and shit.

My job relies on computer work so I have to sit around at home or in a studio unfortunately lol. The only time I'm really able to get out and meet people is on the bus or at the karaoke bar.

I don't dig downtown that much so I don't go there, but it could be beneficial.
