Sup guys. New to the forum. Just a quick question.

Do you guys think accents ( specifically southern accents ) can be a disadvantage when picking up? I just moved to a new area and I'm extremely self critical about it. To the point where it has caused me to shy away from social activities that I would otherwise be more invovled in. I am smart, in college, and get along with almost everyone but its so hard getting over the initial impression that people have once hearing me speak.

I don't really want to change who I am. But is there any way to turn this into something I can use for when i'm out " IN the field " ? [/code]

aaaaaaa :\ Im from England and I only know the stereotypical American accents so I wouldn't be any help :\

But i do know that certain accents do help where I am from ( our accents change a hell of a lot ! ) . You can usually tell from a persons accent if their rich or poor , If their well spoken and educated or an idiot.

In England if a northern person would migrate down south , they will love their accent same if a southerner migrated up north

But in the end you are who you are and if no one likes that , then fxck them !

Yeah. Here it is similiar here in the states. There is a sterotype here that if you are from the south and have an accent you are either a " Redneck " and uneducated etc. It's easy to say to forget about it but I'm in college and there are so many superficial people who make judgements about each other based on nothing more than the first few second intial impressions they have on that person.

I was just wondering if there are any PUA's here who are in a similar sitation and have managed to get past it.

True, southern accents tend to denote a lack of intelligence and education to anyone outside the southern United States. Whether that's a fair judgment is immaterial, since it doesn't change a thing for you. Unfortunately, speaking as eloquently as Oscar Wilde writes won't help you with women either. My advice, tone it down (the southern accent really isn't that sexy) and use it as a C&F conversation starter. Play with stereotypes as a way to get past them.

Ellaborate please. What do you mean by " Play with sterotypes " I was thinking about buying a cowboy hat etc for when I go out and such. But I am not sure if that would hurt me or help me since I want to try to seprate myself from being sterotyped.

I wouldn't do the cowboy hat. But essentially, if the topic comes up, pick your favorite stereotypes and make pretend they're all true (be sure to do it in a sarcastic tone). E.g. "Yes we do all live on farms/run around barefoot/have think the South won the civil war..." Basically, tease her with whatever stereotypes she may have about the South that way. You could even ask her what she knows about where you're from and then run with the first set-up she gives you. Just don't make her feel too stupid...

Yeah I am just afraid that because of my accent girls will make up their mind the second they hear my voice and not give me a chance to hear what I actually have to say.
