Here's the idea.

We go through PUA material - book by book. break down chapter by chapter. This means that people can raise specific queries and we can all increase our knowledge of each set of material by working together. A collaboration of minds!

Obviously one book at a time, one week per chapter.

I feel this will benefit everybody, not just beginners. Worst case scenario it forces you to re-read your shit, which should be done anywya. The break down gives it time to fully understand and digest.

I'd suggest this is broken down in an easy to navigate way - 1 thread per chapter. Lounge or Miscelaneous board?

Thoughts?

I feel like one of the mods would say posting a chapter of an e-book would violate some sort of rule. Sounds good though, run it with Chief or Ryelee

We don't need to post the material.

You read it - post your thoughts/observations/questions. We have a collective breakdown of each chapter to accompany the book itself.

This idea got me so excited that I nutted all over the computer screen.

Well, no it didn't but I think it's damn good idea. However, I think it'd be better to make it one entire book per month rather than making it one chapter per week.

The threads could be titled something like this, perhaps:
January Book Club: The Venusian Arts Handbook by Mystery

...and we could have nominations and votes for the next month's book... or just have one person or people to pick good books.

Good shit.

I'm glad you're excited because you're the one with the power we need to keep it working! Do you like that I'm thinking it's a good enough idea to put 5/5 twice on the poll?

Doing it on a book by book basis could work, but it doesn't allow us to systematically break things down.

The benefits of doing things by chapter, as I see it:
  • - Gives people time to keep up - one chapter per week is childs play.
    - Ensures maximum opportunity to cover every aspect contained within a book.
    - Better structure to the break down - we can have a thread per chapter, that's rather powerful.
    - Due to the structure we are able to direct people to very specific, thorough posts about any problem they are facing.
One takes a little more moderation, but is beneficial.

Alternatively - the threads are going to be open ended. There would be no point in locking them after one week; new people in a year may have some valuable input. As a result, if we were to break it down at the rate of 1 book per month, all we'd need to do is open one thread per chapter, with possibly a master thread? That way people can address specifics, or generics.

Great idea... I assume we'd decide on the book each time by means of a poll? Choice of 5 well-known books on pick-up and with the poll open for X lenght of time... Cool though, I think the one-chapter-per-week approach would be better to really allow people to get into the nitty-gritty of the books

Wow, great idea! I vote for one chapter a week, this way we can really analyze every aspect. So when are we starting?

Yeah it's a pretty good idea. I have a pile of books bigger than me (or at least they would be if most of them weren't ebooks) to get through anyways, so I'm sure I've already got most of what will be suggested.

I think a chapter a week is too slow though. It will take about 4 months per book at that rate, and this will very quickly get boring if we're talking about the same book for 4 months. I think Chief is right, a book a month is better.

I think its an awesome plan. I think a chapter a week is too slow but then again a book a month doesnt allow the whole getting into the nitty gritty. Maybe do a quarter of the book a week, talk about that quarter in the second week while reading the second quarter. And so on. So its still a book a month but allows for good discussion.

TheAce - it's a pretty good compromise. I can see what people are saying regarding a chapter per week - the whole process is designed not to be as quick as possible, however. At the same time it needs to move fast enough to keep people interested.

A quarter of the book per week could be a nice medium - split as 1/4 of the total chapters (rather than the total pages, so as to keep the logistics in tact). The only problem within my mind, is that I feel it's quite important to keep things seperate - if we have a thread, for example, containing 4 chapters, that could be all over the place in terms of discussion. The chapters generally seperate concepts ect. So, perhaps another idea would be to shorten the week timeframe? 1 chapter per 3 days? 1 chapter every (42 (6 weeks) / total chapters)?

Other thoughts: chapters that many people deem irrelevant may be missed by trying to bulk things together. The point is to break down as simply as possible - it may be irrelevant to you, but is that due to your current knowledge levels? Would it be irrelevant to somebody with no exposure to the opposite sex?

If it were broken down more than covering one whole book, it would be a good idea to summarise at the end - this could be a place for people to detail anything that they've picked up, anything that they've achieved as a result, any overall thoughts on the book.

And then we could sell it to the authors and publishers, of course.

I was hoping to get a little more in terms of how we should organise to start, but as we don't have it - starting is the best idea.

I think MM is going to be the best first step - it's certainly one of the most popular methodical books around. Ultimately it's just a starting place.

As threads are open ended, all we need is a "new book timeline". I think 4-6 weeks is going to be best, it will probably depend on the book. I still think that seperating by chapter is the best way to go and nobody has really argued this so that's going to be how we start. So, I will open chapt 1 tonight, and follow with a chapter 2 within the next couple of days. If you want to open the next chapter - go ahead and do so. please try to work chronologically at this stage. I think a link to this thread as an overview should be the only requirement if anybody wants to go ahead and open one up.

thread 1 I'll open in the Misc section (it's basically reference material) - I guess ideally we'd like a seperate board, but ultimately we have to prove that it's worthwhile.

Now we're moving we can implement improvements rather than ironing out details and getting caught up with this thread.

Ultimately this is what I'd like to happen:
- I'm going to read chapter 1 - I will make notes on what I think are important points for discussion.
- You are to also read chapter 1 - do the same.
- We can discuss points raised while continually bringing in new points that have been missed. This should give us a pretty concrete break down of the chapter
- We want to keep discussion narrowed onto the book and chapter where possible. things interlink so it won't be set in stone.
