My friend and I found this one out by accident...

When in a club simply approach a target, or a whole group, put on a big smile and ask if they can do you a favor, most say yes. So then just ask

"Can you request a song for us?"

This worked so many times for me and my wing last weekend. It breaks the ice and gets conversation rolling, if she doesnt like the song you asked for then neg her and start running routines

Obviously it worked for your specfic situation but what if she simply said "no!". I could see it as a follow-on opener like you say the opener then playfully say something like " you look like you know your music how about you pick us a song"
