What is the difference between aqward silence and sexual tension?
Is it something to stay away from?

Awkard silence isn't something to necessarily to stay away from. For example let's say you are building comfort with your target. You are telling a DHV story about yourself and you stop. You stay silent. She now feels compelled to say something about herself and probably qualify herself to you. Silence is a great weapon to use. You should be comfortable in the silence because you are socially comfortable. You shouldn't feel the need to fill the silence with a bunch of stuff because that's kind of a DLV, because you are showing you are not comfortable.

As far as sexual tension goes. I can sometimes be the same thing but slightly different. Another example, you just got done with a long passionate kiss with a girl, you are being quiet, and not touching her just to build tension. You want her, she knows it. She wants you, and you know it but no one is speaking. It really depends on the situation.
