I would probably add it as part of my workout. As I go to the gym to be fit for sport rather than to get strong/big, I wouldn't just do it.
You can do static holds at the end of your full range sets (on isolation movements) although there not "maximal contractions". That method is called Xrep (ironman magizine). Just make sure the TUL (time under load) is under 60 seconds as that would be out of the anaerobic threshold.
