Practice. Read good stories and learn how to tell yours based upon that, as well as from watching people that know how to tell a good story and mimicing them.
Use the Search tool to look for articles on how to DHV and there was a good one on how to construct a DHV story I saw just the other day. |

Im not the greatest natural story teller either, so what I did to get better was to practice A LOT with my wing. We came up with a bunch up canned DHV stories and practiced them on each other. We cretiqued each other till we felt they were right. Once i learned how to tell those stories right, I was able to use the same structure with just about any other story, so my story telling abilities got alot better after that.
Here are some tips (not everyone has to agree with these. They are just things that worked for me and my wing)
- You dont have to lie (although I don think there is anything wrong with compeltely making up a DHV story), but you do have to embelish. That means exagerate a little bit.
-People are always looking for a conclusion. Make sure your story has a strong ending. I have a true story that my friends would always make me tell to people(but it was one of those "you had to be there" things), but the story was more of an anecdote, so it didnt really have a punchline, so when I would tell it, people would always expect more and be kinda disapointed. Now when I tell it, I kinda exagerate the ending, and people always think its a great story and make me tell it to their friends.
-the last tip I have is to make sure your story doesnt sound reheresed. My wing used to do this thing were everytime he was about to go into a DHV, his voice and speech pattern would change. If you werent really into the story or if you had heard the story before, you could HELLA tell this was a prepared story. He sounded like he was acting in a play. I told him what he was doing and he was able to correct it, so now all his DHV stories sound natural.
Hope this was helpful.
