You know what the really funny part here is? People knew the world was round, and what they thought was impossible was Columbus reaching Asia by heading west because his calculations of the distance were incorrect. The cynics were, in fact, correct and Columbus could not reach Asia.

The lesson here? It isn't that you should always be optimistic, but that you should listen to people who actually know what they're talking about and check your math or you're just depending on dumb luck to provide the result you want.
