I'm not a pro or anything, but I had something work pretty well for me and a friend of mine. We were at a bar and saw a group of 7 or 8 girls all talking together in a circle. My friend is a little better than me, so he opened by asking one of them if they knew when (some game, idk) was going to start. We each talked to one of the girls more directly, let's call mine HB8, and I very quickly said "man, I feel bad keeping you from your friends, maybe I could get your phone number and we could continue this conversation another time". She gave me her number, and then didn't have to feel awkward about getting hit on and ignoring her friends. We're going to get coffee tomorrow and there won't be a big group of less hot (and angry about being less hot) girls to worry about.
