I know its a strange question and the answers will PROBABLY be like
"DO IT AND FIND OUT YA' SELF, DIKHED!"

but in all seriousness,
How long does it take, of going 3 times a week and dieting properly to notice:
a) a noticeable difference in strength?
b) a difference in body shape, to the degree that others (like friends) would visibly notice?

im 18, and currently extremely small frame. Although I have some endurance from cardio, in terms of "strength" or "bulk" im pretty much frail. Probably the build of someone whose like 16.
cheers, id rather take answers from people who know from direct experience!
just share what it was like when you started gym.

Gaining muscle is actually a lot harder than toning down. And it depends on how hard and often you work out. I'll say visible result is in about 2-3 months.

Well while going to the gym will help out a ton, diet is what is really going to make the difference. If you are actually on a strict diet, and eating properly, I'd say your friends will start to notice a difference in about 2-3 weeks. You probably won't notice much for about a month, because since you are constantly seeing yourself and its all small changes, it seems like nothing is happening. This can be discouraging, but getting bigger or stronger shouldn't be your only goal when going to the gym.

I remember back when i was constantly going like 4-5 times a week, I was getting bigger and my friends all commented on it, but I seriously felt like i looked the same. One day though, I just noticed how big I had actually gotten and it was a hell of a confidence boost 8)

As far as your strength, you should notice improvements almost right away. You will get stronger before you get bigger. Just push yourself each week, and you should be doing weights you could never do day one after about a month.

Remember, you gotta eat big to get big. Diet is key. It's what I never got down which is why I never saw huge results. I was a whole lot stronger then what I used to be, but I didn't eat enough so I never gained alot of mass.

Hope that helps.

I would start with 3 days a week so you get used to working out, then up it to 4. You want to lift heavy if your goal is to gain bulk. Max yourself out once a week, meaning rep till you cant anymore. Core workouts are important. Oh and dont neglect your lower body. To many guys do then they have chicken legs. Squats are great!
Now as far as diet is concerned, protein is your friend. Whey protein 30 minutes prior to your work out, and whey protein 30 minutes after your work out. Protein shake is best after workout, its processed faster. Get yourself some Glutamine powder as well. you will want to take a spoon full every night, it will help so that you dont burn muscle during your sleep.
If you can buy cassin protein I would suggest making a cassin protein shake before going to bed and add the scoop of glutamine to that. the cassin protein will feed your muscles throughout most of the night as its digested much slower than whey. As far as any other supplements go I wouldnt be able to help there. I take 1M.R before going to the gym for extra energy...

Remember Core is important, the stronger your core, the stronger you will be overall.

Cut back from cardio or stop it.

Split your muscle group up and only work them out once a week, but really push them. Here is my. Chest, Shoulder, Back, Arm, Legs with one ab work out every day. Followed with 2 day rest period (saturday and sunday). Resting and good diet is key to see results and muscle growth. Also, take one week off every 2 months from lifting.

Results are seen depending how hard you push yourself. If you have spotter, you can really push yourself.

Also, make sure you lift properly. If better to lift lighter and do it properly then to go heavier and not lift properly. Example, if your doing a excercise to target your bicep, that should be your target. You should not be using your whole body.
