Post subject:  The guys with the girls are their boyfriends
So , you approach a set with 3 hot girls and 2 guys; you've got their attention, you're building rapport, its looking good, so you ask for one girls number but the guy suddenly "amps" up, "hey, thats my girlfriend!"

How do you respond to this predicament, and more importantly, how do you read whether or not they are dating before approaching?

Body language. If they are dating more than likely they will act like a couple, it should be pretty easy to pick up. If you for what ever reason can't pick up on this, then go out during the day and look for couples and study their body language. If they are not dating their body language will show it.

Exactly agreed with everything that jurupa said, the guy sais that she's his GF, you reply ''Hey man sorry I didn't know, respet to you you got the right girl man [high five him] :)'' and then leave for another set, however a lot of times the dude'll respect you for saying this and the group often reels you back in, if two are GFs you still got a shot with third one ;)

For BL, you'll see them standing more closely and together, holding hands, whispering, kissing of course...
Just hit the field and observe, you'll see it :D

^ This. Or something along those lines.

You're a fun guy who is out to meet new people and have a good time. Right? Most guys would take that as a compliment (I know I would), and it shows respect to both the guy and the girl. You don't have to eject right away, either.

The BEST way to avoid all of this is to ask, at the beginning of introductions, "how do you all know each other?..." boom...clear!

Yeah, seriously. You shouldn't ask people a bunch of piddling little fluff questions, but essential information like that is totally different.

In short, if you're curious about something, ASK! It doesn't matter what you're wondering about either, no matter how forward. It will show you have the confidence to probe in such a fashion and throw her off balance. Make sure that the more sensitive the question is, the more playful you are when asking.
