I have talked to tall women directly about this, in fact I have used it as an opener. "Would you be offended if I called you gargantuan". I've gotten mixed responses with it, some laugh, some blow me off. I think it has less to do with the neg and more to do with the insecurity of the female herself, so it's hit and miss when you go for physical attributes like that. It's best to go for things like what they are wearing or personality stuff.

My favorite is usually make fun of something they are wearing, for instance if they have big earrings on I'll say "Why didn't you wear the big earrings tonight?".

But also don't get all hung up on it, some girls just have a bad attitude and you can't think twice about it, just move on to the next.

In situations like yours where the women is kind of a little moody, I like to just ramp it an extra notch, so for instance my response to that message would be. "Don't worry my profile wont take you long to read, its shorter then you "...lol
