Actually, I think canned pick up lines work really well. But here's the caveat: they must either be extraordinarily lame (like the one debated above) or shockingly outrageous (e.g. the Anger Management line, which I've successfully field tested). Think about it, if you bring a lame one with humor, you're picking her up whilst making fun of of the whole PU thing. If you bring a shocker, you show you have balls. And both times she's aware of what you're doing. But doesn't the same happen in a direct approach? And that works well if you have game.

If you're gonna use any kind of opener, use a genuine one. Don't use something that's CLEARLY a pick up line and is so predictable. That's just lame.

Use openers if you have to. From your own life and your own words. Be original

I suggest you just be real with girls. Take a general interest in them instead of trying to take shortcuts through pick up lines and routines. If you like girls, why be afraid of showing it?

You forget the most basic point of PU--in my eyes anyway. And that is to have fun. Don't be so serious and forget about rules. If I feel like telling a girl that I'm "on the verge of exploding in my pants" I'll open with that. And 9 times out of 10 it leads to a really fun interaction. If you can deliver it right Remember, you can say absolutely anything, if you say it the right way.

@tao: I use direct openers if I feel like it. But sexual and tremendously inappropriate openers achieve the same thing, with the slight difference that they are way more fun. I think your advice is great for rAFCs but not for someone who has success with whatever he feels like doing at a particular moment.
