So if I were to take an voice recorder into the field, would I keep the device in my back pant-pocket or my front pant-pocket? Or is a coat/jacket pocket a better option?

Also, assuming a external microphone is necessary, where's the best place to attach it? On the collar? Or would that be too obvious?

But if you feel you must, why not incorporate the voice recorder into your game:
Tell the target that you are doing a report on hot girls for example.

But to walk around strapped up like a narc is a dumb idea.

There are iPhone apps (if you don't have one as a PUA: tut-tut-tut) that record covertly. You see nothing special on the screen. iPhone recording quality is excellent.

Another trick if you really want to spy... I believe there's a Windows Mobile program that picks up the phone without ringing and activating the screen, provided that you call from a preset number. So leave your phone with the girls, go to the toilet, call this phone with a second phone and listen what they are saying about you. I don't want to endorse this because it's highly illegal.

but anyway, the main reason people use audio recording stuff is more for advertising when trying to make money lol or for validation.
