| Post subject: | Stupid but necessary question: Reputation? |
I just joined the site but I keep bumping into technical barriers and would appreciate it if someone could just explain them to me. 5 post min. for hyperlinks - anti-spam, ok fine 50 post min for certain sections - really? Okay people like to post stupid irrelevant shit, also fine Reputation. This is the real substance of this thread. What purpose does Reputation serve other than as an excuse to label people newbs, and more specifically, what are the various means of building reputation for those of us who would like to avoid such labels? I would appreciate a technical over a general answer in this regard, however I would also appreciate my sister if she didn't bitch so much. I guess what I'm saying is I'm not bitching, I would simply like to understand the mechanics of this forum better, and am somewhat surprised this information is not available in the FAQ section, I checked. Thanks, -Classic* |

the reputation isn't so much important since a lot of points people have are from simply posting. whats more important is the 'votes' under the reputation. If someone has votes that means that someone somewhere thought that user deserved to be awarded extra rep or have rep removed from them. clicking on the number of votes takes you to the page that gives information on the reasons the person has votes and whether they are positive or negative. other than the votes thing, rep doesn't matter. |

So they're more like kudos then. Okay, I would just see people who's reputation far outstripped their # of posts so I was curious as to how that worked. |

Okay, follow up question: If I decide to GIVE rep points to someone does that mean that I LOSE rep points? That's not much incentive unless I really feel what dude was saying. Please clarify. |

*sigh* true. I have read the truth, and it has set me free, no more worrying about rep. I have a tendency to over-analyze things, probably what brought me into pick up in the first place. So thankyou for your non-answer I guess. |

It's also a way to slow us all down in our never-ending quest to get rid of 'ego'. It's also useful as perhaps 'newbs' can see who's advice to 'trust' a little more. Though, you should always listen to yourself first. Just 'cuase someone has a high positive vote, doesn't always mean they are spitting gold dust. |
