Post subject:  autistic cousin

I know this thread doesn't have much to do with pick up.

But I know that between you guys that there are some clever people that can help me possibly.

I have a cousin. He's 17 and came from far abroad to visit me and my family, on his own.
Now, the problem is: he has autism. He doesn't say much, or speak at all. He is silent most of the time, if you ask him something he will only anwser with "yes" or "no".
If you ask him a question on wich you can't simply anwser "yes" or "no", he will simply say either "I don't know" or he just gives a small explanation and becomes silent again.
He also doesn't show much emotions.

An other problem is, he comes from far abroad, which means, from a small island in the Caribean. I live in a big city. So our interests are quite different. He's more into watching tv or playing video games, and not like shopping or going out (let alone being social or talking). Like me, he likes fitness, so that's already one thing I know I can do with him.

Does anyone have a good advice for me? Or a good insight on autistic people?

I just want to make my cousin feel comfortable, that he enjoyes a good vacation and that he opens up, but I just don't realy know how.

It be better you to go to autistic forums than to ask here. As you are dealing with someone with a mental disorder and it be best to ask those in the know. Below are some forums for you to ask at:

Jurupa gave good advice. Go to autism forums on how to open autistic people up. I am slightly autistic. I have traces of the feelings that you described. It's tough but I have the ability to make the decision to be open. Sometimes you just feel to lie under a rock for days at a time and not say a word. It's good you want to help him out. All the best bro!

Generally autistic people have one or two specialised interests, and don't know how to participate in any real interaction about other things. it's kind of like they haven't been born with the rules of social interaction.

find his interests, and discuss, or as you know he's into fitness, just do something physical with him.

thanks for the replies!

he's here for a few days right now. he's not spontanious and doesn't say much, but he opened up sometimes. when i didn't had money to buy a cd, he wanted to pay me one. he's very interested in metal music. i showed him a lot of places. the days were a bit touristic, but i think he enjoyed it. he's not difficult and agrees on most things if i want to take him out somewhere.
