What does this signify? What's the strategy behind this? As a real life example, I was on a university sports team (a weekend long competition). There were about 10 teammates. 3 guys (including myself) and 7 girls. Two of the guys there were pickup artists (one alpha male and one beta male wingman). He was gaming a foreign exchange student there. When we both sat down at a university restaurant to socialize after practice, they went to the front counter to buy 2 pitchers of beer. They came back to the table and poured us glasses. No one asked for beer.

Is this a way to show who the boss is at the table?

It could be, you felt like that right?

It is a good way to take charge and show that you are taking care of your friends. However, you do not have to do it that way, there are cheaper ways to do it.

But of course, it is also a nice gesture and someone else will get the next round so whatever.

It's a pretty smooth move on his part. A guy who buys drinks for his friends shows he has money and is generous with it, both DHV's. Buying and pouring the group puts him as the alpha male and as the "provider" for the group.

3:7 are good odds for a situation like that; I'm sure he wouldn't buy pitchers of beer for a table of almost all guys and just a few girls-- it'd be a wasted investment. Girls in general drink less beer than guys, and get drunk quicker. By buying and pouring drinks for everyone, they're somewhat obligated to drink it, even if they normally do not drink beer.
