wondering through the aisles. Paying attention to products, not the world around me. A woman came around the corner just as I was taking a step, and we almost collided. She looks at me, smiles, and says "sorry". I say "You know, you could just say hello instead of trying to run down the random handsome guy". She laughed (touched her hair too) and then...nothing. I couldn't figure out a place to take this. I have thought about it since and figured I should have jumped direct and said "well, you're cute anyway, so I'll take this opportunity to see if you're cool". What do you guys think? |

Great job with the opener, strimpboi. Props. And yeah, I think the line you thought of as a follow-up might have worked. The intent of it -- to get her to qualify herself to you -- is good. The only issue I have with a line like that is that it doesn't really lead her to a clear topic for her answer. It may be a bit too open-ended, she may be flustered about how now to show she's cool, and so the line could prove to be a dead end. And then you're back where you started after your opener. She smiled, laughed, and touched her hair, so she seemed clearly interested. I think all you have to do in that situation is to either get her talking, arrange an insta-date, or offer her a clearer way to qualify herself to you. So maybe you could have said -- these are just off the top of my head -- something like: "Obviously, the Target gods wanted us to come together. And we wouldn't want to upset the Target gods. [pause for smiles] What brings you to this aisle?" or "The hot chocolate and coffee in aisle 5 inspired me. Let's grab a cup together and carrying on our conversation. But you have to promise to stop physically assaulting me [smile]" or "I think you gave me whiplash. I just need a second to call my lawyer, then you can start telling me the reasons why I shouldn't sue your pants off [smile]." Hope this helps. Ciornia |

Well you did well in that you thought of a quick line straight away. It wasn't perfect as unless she could think of something funny to say in return she might well go quiet. But in real life it matters less what you say and more that you say anything at all. You need to lower your standards (with regards as what to say). In this case anything would have been better than slience as a follow up line. As she had given you an ioi with the hair you could have given her a complement and then fluff talked a bit. You could have asked her advice about your shopping and gone to a new aisle together. Basically the longer you keep her talking the better your chances are of a solid number close or an instant date. So in short anything would do but I would suggest a complement and some fluff talk or something about your shopping. |
