| Post subject: | Humor - improving skills |
Hey, are there on this forum people who greatly improved their humor skills with time? I can be quite funny when I'm drunk and in a good mood, but I quit drinking since 1 month because it became problematic for me (and I have to learn to approach while not being drunk). I was pretty funny too while smoking weed (which i quit too; quit smoking sigarettes and weed for almost 3 months now, cold turkey) Are there people who improved their humor skills with time? Please share your story. I can be very funny when I really feel good but I have to say that it doesn't happen a lot now. I don't like joking like: a standard canned joke. Whenever someone throws that kind of joke, I mostly don't laugh. It's not funny for me. I like jokes that can be thrown in the moment of the conversation, the right words at the right moment or the creative stories that can come up. Tell me your progress stories |

first, determine your sense of humor. secondly you can buy a book that david deanglos mentions in his audio series, comedy writing secrets by melvin helitzer. also from what you say, it sounds like you like wit.... which is a little hard to develop unless your brains naturally hard wired for. |

I can have a very sarcastic humor and kind off over the edge, it is (sometimes extremely) funny for people who know it's not meant to hurt but for sensible people it kind of makes me pass like an arrogant asshole, so I now kind of stop acting like that. I got to know my limits with the cocky funny humor (witch can sometimes become more cocky than funny). Yeah I allready tought about buying this book, I'll do that. |

Great topic and I need some help here, too. I play a lot off the people I'm around...if I'm around someone who is quiet, I'll be quiet too. On the other hand, I'll be funny if I have someone I can banter with. It's hard to just come out with stuff on my own. Sounds like a great book to check out. |

I know this could be going over all ground, but I remember reading a bit of David D and he mentions about literally just practising. Like eve when watching a tv show with your mates or alone and you see a situation, make a comment on it, this way you are likely to get into a routine of making quick comebacks and comments when you're out and about. without really thinking about making them |

I ordered the book, but it can take a while before it arrives here. I'll give you a review when I've read it. In the meantime I'm gonna watch some online streaming comedy and whenever I hear a line (like a response to a question that might happen in real life) that I think is funny and would work really well, I'll write it down. It doesn't has to be exactly the same thing that I watched but some jokes/funny lines can inspire me to write another one. |

Trying to explain how to be funny? Over the internet? Non canned stuff? That is difficult man. What makes you laugh? Does it even have to be funny? Someone said that laughter is either a reaction to an unexpected event like completely contradicting the previous things or it is a reaction to social tension. A relief that is. Like if someone embarrasses him or herself you can relieve the man or woman by showing that it is not worth being embarrased about, joke about it... |

Well, i think canned funny stories mostly suck (they personally almost never make me laugh), except when they come from real life experience. But a nice (canned or not) line at the right moment can be great. Off course it can be difficult to talk about on the internet, but that's our only option on forums, so we can do our best and try. |

as most commedians say its not the joke its the delivery . if you show all domminent signs when delivering humour eg satand tall use yoru hands dont look down, smile , no matter what you say should have an impact . when you deliver somthing correctly your also giving the vibe to the person that if they dont laugh they will look stupid not you |

Actually I changed my mind about this whole humor thing, I noticed humor naturally comes when I'm in a good state, so I guess I should focus on getting that good state instead of focussing on the humor. |
