I've always wondered this.. After you get a phone number.. Emoticons/smiley - should you be using them in text messages.. yes, no, depends on circumstances? (if so, which circumstances?) I'm fairly comfortable with using them, but it wouldn't be a big deal to stop using them for me.. just wanted to know what you guys think.. |

My two cents: Use a smiley/emoticon if there is doubt about what you convey. Allow me to expand: Let's say you message a girl "You're such a brat". Without the emoticon of  this can be taken wrong, she might think you actually consider her a brat. Remember, C&F, irony and sarcasm is hard to convey through a text-based medium, an emoticon will help her understand the deeper meaning.

use them to point out sarcastic/joking tones and try not to use too many. one theory is that mirroring her smiley usage behavior will help build rapport |

So basically it's ok to use them but only when needed and not too often. Makes sense, ok thanks alot! |
