Post subject:  Help please: Field report: Opening a moving target

Hi guys,

I was on my way to the train station at about noon and decided I'd make an approach before the train left. So this incredible, maybe 29 year-old, blonde HB9 was walking towards me. She didn't notice me quickly check her out which was good. This is what happened:

Eyeline: "Hey I need to ask you a quick question", smiling.
HB9: "...", looks at me a bit surprised
Eyeline: "Is...kissing...cheating?"

She was obviously expecting me to ask for directions or something and it took her a while to realize what I'd said (or maybe she was just a bit stupid :P ). Then she just laughed really loudly.

HB9: "I think you'll have to figure that out for yourself", laughing.
Eyeline: "Hmm. Ok thanks"

Now this is what I need help with: she was walking quite quickly but she did completely stop as I asked the question. When she realized what I asked, she sort of started walking away and shook her head. It could've been because she was in a hurry or because she thought I was a bit of a joke (I'm younger than her).

How do you stop moving targets? Can you make them forget that they need to go somewhere? Can you pick up lonely, walking women? Any opinions and advice is very welcome! What would have been the "ideal" pick-up in that situation?

Love, Eyeline

Sounds to me like the HB9 had control of the frame.
You obviously meant to just open conversation, while her "You'll have to figure that out for yourself" sounds like she's just labeled you as some kind of idiot that cheated on his gf.
What you could've done is do the same opener, but just before she answers, or even just interrupting her quickly after she intends to respond, give it another twist like:
"It's because a friend of me asked, I've told him it's probably ok, but I figured I'd also get a female point of view on this."
Now this still doesn't really take away the risk of being labeled like that, but at least it stops you from being shot down immediately like she did now :/
