A woman friend of mine is urging me to to get this woman I've met up with three-four times, a gift. I feel it's unnecessary, and gives way too much value. Is there a unspoken rule about these things ?

Yes, there is.

Never listen to a woman when it comes to getting women.

Or as Eddie puts it, if you want to hunt deer, ask the experience hunter, not the deer.

That's a moronic analogy. Seems to be a specialty around here. Does this need explaining?

Ask a deer about hunting deer = ask a deer how to kill its own kind ; ask a woman about what makes other women click/respond positively/etc. = not threatening to anyone.

OP,

If you've had 3-4 successful dates (e.g. she's clearly into you and you're both having a blast seeing one another) then I don't see why you can't spend a little bit of time to buy her something modest. It shows you actually give a shit about her. If you're going over to her place, something as simple as picking out one beautiful rose at a flower shop will do. If you have a sense for her style, maybe something simple like $20-30 earrings. The positive gesture will mean a lot to her, if she's into you.

If a woman makes you feel like a king, only then is it acceptable to treat her as a queen.

Be a challenge early on if the girl really excites you and you think it may have legs. Don't get her a thing if you aren't exclusive. She has to earn you. The more attractive a woman is, the more she craves a man who challenges her.

I gave nothing the last (not this recent one) V Day to the girl I was seeing but not exclusive (my current gf). We'd been hooking up for a month, and I didn't even call her.

She was floored.

The next night in bed, she asked why I got her nothing, and said she LIKED IT., that other people kissed her ass too much. A guy she danced with that weekend with her girlfriends sent flowers to her fucking work. Two ex's also sent flowers, and she received texts, candy and cards by a variety of clueless douchebags, lol.

That night, she forced the "what are we talk", and brought up exclusivity. I agreed.

Still with her. She's awesome.

What did I get her this V Day? 8 orgasms, candy, a six pack of premium beer, and I made her breakfast.

But you said that she told you another guy asked her out on a date and asked how you felt about that and your response was if she went out on a date with another guy, you'd "bail". Maybe you meant to say she forced you to choose exclusivity.

Wow, man, stop spending your entire day reading my posts.

But yeah, that's how it happened.

She didn't force me into anything, she's just crafty.

Stop embellishing shit. It's okay to be a real guy instead of trying to portray a character you wish to be. You have the girl...why try to make the story more than what it really is? You'd help more guys if you were honest about how you really got your girlfriend instead of telling these tall tales. If you didn't make so much stuff up that was unbelievable so you can look good in front of everyone, I wouldn't remember any of this shit you post. This whole story about Valentine's day and how she was floored about you not getting her anything doesn't match what you say originally happened.

Jack, you're getting a little obsessive again.

As my friend says, "Feel better, Jack!".

I feel great, but you're avoiding and trying to change the subject. You are misleading people and pushing them down a path that you yourself haven't taken. It's either sick or sad.

Wait!!! Your "friend" says? I thought that was your girlfriend. What did you do? Did you tell some girl that I was feeling bad and a picture of her in her underwear would make me feel better? Fucking Freudian slips.

Man are you grasping at straws.

You're so weird and paranoid right now you're conjuring up conspiracy theories.

My gf read your posts on the forum and thought you were sounding upset and emotional. So I suggested a friendly "get well" note.

You're avoiding again. Why do you embellish so much? Anyone that reads your posts can tell that you aren't being genuine. It's not me making shit up...they are your own words.

The girl I'm with now said "I got asked on a date, do you have an opinion?". That was her way of having the "what are we" talk. I told her I'd bail if she went in a date and she was giddy. We've been exclusive since.
Tell your friend I appreciate the gesture.

That's simply not true, in fact I've been complemented for being honest here. So much so that when you called me out on making shit up, I had my extremely fit gf send you a note.

No need to be upset over such small things.

How is that different from what I said, she brought up the exclusivity, and loved my answer to her little game. Me not getting her a gift brought that on. She was asked on a date by one of her V-Day pursuers.
