I walked into a gathering, this was a semi formal event where everybody was sitting around a table. there was a girl and guy sitting and talking with each other. every time this happens, I dont approach because I think "they are probably together"....

but then during their conversation, the girl started looking at me, I think because she caught me checking her out. It was an intense moment of eye contact. I broke eye contact first, because, again, I thought "she has a boyfriend, I am just going to mind my own business because I dont want to get my ass kicked"

But then the guy found a piece of paper on the floor there, and he was looking around the room for a trashcan for 10 minutes. he kept asking the people there "where do I put this? do you have a trash can?" which made me start wondering "is he her gay friend?" and "is he her straight friend who has friendzoned himself into the ground?"

so IDK, my question is basically: when a girl and guy are talking to each other, and you sense that they are not a couple, how do you approach the girl?

You open the set just like you would anywhere else. Be super fuckin friendly to the guy. And then you move the conversation to find out what you wanna know. You could do this by saying, "You know, I just wanna let you guys know that you are an adorable couple. How long have you been together?" Then they will tell if you they're dating or not. If they are, hold a couple of minutes of polite conversation, then excuse yourself. If they aren't, DHV, isolate, and close. Keep it simple.
