I am around 6 ft tall and have lost some weight. Even though I have gotten into bodybuilding, I never really took it as seriously due to academic demands and I have not paid attention to my nutrition for a while now.

Have improved my appearance significantly, I get compliments on it here and there, but I want to better it just because I see that handsome men get a lot of respect in society.

So is it just mostly genetics or can you really do wonders to make yourself a good looking guy?

Physical appearance is one of the most subjective things. It depends on your taste and current societal norms. With that said, there are some male traits that are found to be superior- jawbone, cheekbones, lips. Certain type of eyes, head shape, etc.

Either way, if your facial features aren't too distorted, (you have a small head and a big nose, weirdly shaped head, very thin lips, your eyes are very far apart or too close together, etc.) it's not a big deal. If you're an average looking guy and take care of yourself, dress well, and are charismatic and charming enough, you will benefit from your physical appearance.

Genetics are still random in a sense, and the answer to your question is complicated. I would put it in three levels:

1. You're genetically superior- you have well-balanced features, unique eyes, full lips, strong jaw and cheekbones, and most importantly nothing about you is off-putting.

2. There is nothing genetically off-putting about you- you don't have any "superior" features but also don't have any off-putting features.

3. You're genetically inferior- there is something genetically off-putting about you: some of the things I listed above.

At number 1, it's mostly genetics- you don't need to do much to appear good looking, given that you take care of yourself as an average guy. You can still wear hoodies and jeans, not get a haircut, and you'll still be good looking. Of course, it's preferable that you dress well, have a good hair style, etc.

At number 2, it's mostly what you do- you can have a hairstyle that will bring out a facial feature you want, you should dress well, take care of your hygiene, and you will be considered a good looking guy. If you don't do those things, you will be considered an average to bad looking.

At number 3, it's genetics but you can't afford to not take care of yourself if you want to get it in. Unless you have a super low standard or have a ton of money.

I have a hard time determining if I am in category 1 or category 2. As weird as it sounds I have observed my appearance in the mirror sometime to see what it is about me but then again I have noticed certain things. If I get my hair cut too short, it just doesn't look right on me so I guess I would probably fall more towards category 2. Then on the other hand I have had countless compliments on my eyes for some reason and some girls have played with my hair and said they are soft.

But I notice that my face is not angled like some male models have. I mean good looks matter a lot in the sense that you have more room to operate with and can afford to make rookie mistakes and still get it in. Yet I have also noticed that attractive women do not value good looks as much in the sense that good looking guys do not get approached by them.
