I have seen this work a couple of times, generally speaking i can be classified as a "nice guy" but i thought fuck it, i am going to be straight forward, and it works in some cases. obviously it depends how you word it exactly, saying "i like you and want to see you again" isn't going to cut it. But saying "I have fun talking to you and i want to hang out sometime" is better.

However what are the disadvantages of this. Is there anything that has to be taken into consideration ?

recently there was this chick which i got sexual with at this party, we both talk to each other since (it was about a month ago) but for one reason or another we won't be able to see each other in person outside of university. I ask her out, she won't come, and vice versa. So i sent her a text saying along the lines of, i think we have good chemistry, if you don't want to see me outside in person then thats cool and we can just be acquitances.
I got a response, back with her saying how we can experiment, and i said give me a time and il see what i can do.

Be interesting to see if this works out. It just cuts the bullshit.

You know what you want and you expressed your feelings without being needy. Great!
