I joined a walking set talking to them from the side, they reacted, enjoyed the conversation but they kept on walking as if I wasn't there. I pretended that I wanted to go the same direction but when I intentionally stood still they just kept on walking. Do I need to stop a walking set?

Use a false time restraint so they know that you won't keep them long because you have other things to do. "I have to go -insert reason- but I had to stop you and tell you -insert reason-" Set will either stop or not at this point, lol. You can walk with them if you guys are going the same way lol. Just ask beforehand to not look like a creep.

I'm just telling you strategies that work, you can decide which one to use in a given situation. Technically, according to proper protocol, you should stop them and open them from the front.
