Been doing this whole mindfulness thing, dunno if anyone else has heard about it, but it's the best thing I've ever tried for inner game.

Yes, and it works very well for a wide variety of things, particularly in reducing one's anxieties.

Grounding exercises are second-to-none for staying present and helping restore balance to the body.

This sounds very interesting. Recommend any particular material or books on the subject?

You mean meditating and being in the moment? I've always been interested in this kind of thing. Do you have any particular tips?

I'm aware of this from my studies of Buddhism but not really seen it in a pickup context before. Would be interesting to see how you guys apply this?

Anything by Jon Kabat-Zinn (considered one of the guru's of mindfulness therapy) would be good. Dr Russ Harris' "The Happiness Trap" is an amazing little book full of easy-to-do exercises one could do anytime at any place. I've recommended to some counselor colleagues of mine and friends receiving great feedback. In fact I know of some clinical practitioners who use mindfulness techniques to bring dissociated clients back into awareness. Powerful stuff.

Here's a good .pdf on some Grounding exercises you can do to help alleviate anxiety and be more in the here-and-now. http://www.google.ca/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=g ... GQ&cad=rja

There are also many Grounding video clips on youtube that can help put your mind at ease. Here are a few:

Mindfulness, which is a Western synthesis of Buddhist and Taoist philosophies, has been around for hundreds of years and is extremely effective in calming the body and mind. I use it with many of my clients and its practiced throughout the realm of counselling psychology. A great place to start is Eckart Tolle's Power of Now (I listen to the audiobook as I find the book unbearably difficult to comprehend). Another book you may want to look at is "Mindfulness in Plain English", which I'm told is one of the most comprehensive books on the subject.

For anyone who has watched RSD, Tyler uses a lot of mindfulness techniques to develop what he terms as a strong core identity. Most of the people you meet who have a strong 'inner' sense of self are mindfulness gurus in one sense or other; they just may not be aware that they are. One of the key premises of NOT being present is that we identify too strongly with the mind ("I am my mind"), which keeps us bogged down in past thoughts (which we believe to be our identity), and future projections (what may or may not happen). The consequence of this is that we live unconsciously, never truly present in the moment. Eckhart Tolle speaks at length about this and the dysfunction it creates in our lives, even on a society-wide scale. The key with this is not identifying too strongly with your thoughts and feelings, but rather acknowledging they are there and standing outside of them observing them much like a child would observe a new object without getting caught up in the "why".

Mindfulness is, in short, light years ahead of anything else spoken about on this forum, but its a lifestyle not a quick fix/panacea or 'routine' you can use per se.

I have tried, it actually helped me a lot to overcome my anxiety. My brother is a pschychologist, so when i was younger he encouraged me to do it.
