I've wondered this for quite awhile and, in all 12 years of playing guitar, I haven't figured it out! What exactly turns women on about a guy playing guitar? I've heard several different things. I've heard that it portrays sensitivity and emotion, or like my girl says "It shows that they're talented and creative." But is that REALLY a strong enough reason that women feel the urge to take their clothes off and have sex with guitar players?!

Oh and also on a side note: any good song ideas to play for girls? Something recognizable obviously, and something that makes them sing along. I can play anything, so basically name your tune and I'll learn it and test it out ;)

I'm thinking that it's all DHV.

You can get everyone's attention easy, and you can hold it for a significant time, you have this power whenever you have a guitar. That's pretty sexy.

Look at it this way -
Playing guitar is just another way to appeal to someone's emotions :
You play a nice song that some chick knows, she immediately feels a bit more connected to you than a minute ago.
Its not sensitivity and confidence, but its more about knowing that you have something in common
"oh my god, you play james morrison? i've been listening to him non stop since i was 10! wow"
and there out of the blue comes a topic for a conversation.
but its not enough just playing guitar, you gotta know how to move from there.
consider it as another opener!

I play John mayer's songs alot and also clapton and stuff, but whatever goes with the flow ;)

Great points! But what about when a guitarist plays something that she ISN'T familiar with, like a crazy fast solo? That doesn't really relate to her, yet she would still want to jump in your pants... Explanation for that phenomenon? lol

I think it's really the DHV thing. You're demonstrating high social value - You've been seen and appreciated by a relatively large group of people, unless you're total garbage at which point it does backfire pretty brutally.

When you solo you're showing off awesome skills that took time and dedication, if you're good, it shows and raises your value in the room. She might find the speed of the solo, if you're shredding or something, a real thrill. Personally if I saw a girl shredding like Yngwei, ("Holy shit!") I'd be all over that. And I'm not even a big Malmsteen fan.

I actually just did a performance on a stage with acting(taking an acting class at uni). Afterwards the difference was clear; girls who wouldn't look at me before saw me on stage and were more willing to be opened after class.
If you stand out, people notice. If you stand out well, people value you.

When you're alone 1vs1, play some intimate song and make a connection. Like Aegis88 said, you'll need to do more than just play some nice songs or else you'll lose the connection you built, but it definitely beats fluff talk.

Finally another thing I thought is not undervaluing the value of social preconceptions of certain roles. Even when you say "I play guitar", then they'll think of who? Rolling Stones, Hendrix, or maybe Johnny Depp from
Chocolat. Either way, these are all desirable men, and maybe in their heads they'll be like, "ooh maybe he's a gypsy/pirate/creepy-Willy-Wonka too." and will be more interested in getting to know you.

nothing beyond showing that you have another side of your life

of course it will back fire if you have a relationship with the girl and she finds out that you only know that "one" song like 60% of "guitar" players
