I don't get it, isn't it a compliment? You're basically acknowledging the fact that she comes from old money by saying that. Wealthy people do this all of the time. I have clothing in my closet 10+ years older than me [my dad's, grandfather's, etc], the age brings out character. why do you think companies like J. crew, Ralph Lauren, Brooks Brothers, Lacoste have their clothes broken in or prewashed for a long time? to make it seem old/used.

I said i to a girl randomly without thinking at one club in Manhattan and she thanked me...i don't get it

You're thinking about it too much. Nobody's going to think about it so much in-field, including the people you are talking to. Negs are supposed to be complements, spoken with sincerity, but some addon kinda knocks her down a bit. But, you actually kind of have the classic line wrong. It's more like "Oh I love that necklack! My grandmother wore fake jewlery too, it looks great." The neg part is assuming the jewelry is fake. Even if you didn't include that, most women in their 20s and 30s do not want to be compared to an 80 year old grandmother :D

This more than anything else.

According to her, you're comparing her to an old lady. She thinks that it's a painting of her in a unflattering light. No matter how nice your grandmother is. But, she doesn't know that.

Hence, it is NOT a compliment in their minds.
