Do you tease them with the kiss or just rush for it? I see no real point in rushing the kiss so much that 4 minutes into it you're inside each other's mouth. Exception is that if I see that the girl is already aroused and I'd take her home fast. Don't worry mate, it's a common mistake. And it's still better than if you didn't go for it. The problem with rushing it is that you are giving too much too easily. It's not really the timespan that matters, but you need to make sure that a lot of tension is built before you kiss the girl.
