Post subject:  Magic, Juggling and Balloon modelling

Hey guys

I used to do magic (serious sleight of hand for about 2 years.) I still remember some of it. Also I can juggle very well with lots of 3 ball variations. And the icing on the clown cake I can model balloons.

lol :)

I know magic is a good DHV, but what about the other two? And how would I do it?

I think just stealing her keys, phone and purse and juggling with them would possibly make me look like a nob.

Thanks guys :)

Oh one more thing, would I sound like a complete dork if I ever mention a magic club I used to go to? I used to go learn with pro magicians and that is where I picked up the sleight of hand bug. Dont regret it for one second, but would I sound nerdy?

Cheers guys :)

Your magic story sounds so cool I want to hear it. a) magic b) professionals c) the secret sleight of hand bug or thing or trick whatever it is it sounds intriguing

Stealing stuff and juggling is cool too, just dont become their entertainer and force them to do things themselves if they want to see more.

dont you think balloon modeling is lame? I just learned some basic stuff and it seems incredible easy to me(eventhough I like it). anyways im sure you can utilize it somehow, simply having a skill is always a little bit of a DHV, I think this one is great to teach maybe.

Balloon modeling is great for a Day 2. Go out to a park with her (OR the childrens ward at a hospital) and make them for the kids and teach her to make them in the process.

Thanks for your input mate. I like the idea of them doing things for me to do things.
Yeah balloon modelling is very easy to a point, the basic ones. I can do some more advanced ones lol but they are generally easy and actually strangely fun and satisfying.

The magic story
I got into magic when I was about 13yo. Stumbled across a magic shop website one night and some of the tricks sounded cool. So, a couple months later I remembered the shop and googled magic shops.
Anyways, I found another site and ordered a penetration frame, and haunted deck. I was hooked. The next Christmas I got a few more gimmicky tricks, and then for my birthday I got a couple more.
Then one day I came home from school and my dad had found an advertisement in the paper advertising a newish magic club. He showed me this and agreed to take me. So I made the calls etc, and it was fine.

Nervous as hell, not knowing what to expect, I went. Spent the next 2 years attending fortnightly 2 hour sessions. My gimmicky tricks looked absolute crap compared to these professional magicians using pure sleight of hand. And they taught me the basics, and I then bought the Royal Road to Card Magic nd read it cover to cover. I was hooked on sleight of hand (using normal everyday things.) My favourite was card magic - and I still like to mess about with cards now.
I even made up my own variation on Jazz Aces and wowed the pro crowd at the club. Magic became my life. My friends and family could now inspect EVERYTHING before and after and I would still wow them.

A small way into my magic bug (with just basic sleight of hand and LOTS of gmmicks) I performed at my local museum on an open day they had. Nerves destroyed me - first time ever even talking to strangers, and I was performing magic!

I then entered a couple competitions at another magic club (mainly old ex-pro magicians and the like) I entered:

1) close up magic competition - I was shitting a brick and my nerves got the better of me so my presentation failed. Early in the my magic "career". Came 2nd out of 3 juniors. :(

2) Card magic competition - I was into advanced sleight of hand and read couple books and even one on presentation. I made up my own routine and the patter and the likes. Even my own tricks, completely personalised.

I won. Beat everybody, even the adults competing. I was 15, and this made me sooo happy :)

I lost the bug when the club (first one, with pros) changed format. Instead of turnig up and talking to who you want about what you want, they changed to a "card day" then next time "coins day" then next time "rope day" format. Since I was mainly interested in cards, this got boing real fast. Also, some of my best friends there had left, so I left and quickly fell out of practice. It was during this club that I was introduced to jugling and balloon moddelling too lol.

Damn you EvoJ you beat me to it lol. Yea i'd save the balloon stuff for a day 2. Magic is always a solid routine just dont' call it magic. Girl's have heard that stuff way too often. Go with sleight of hand. "I learned some sleight of hand while chilling with (some magician guy you were talking about), want to be amazed?" I can't imagine a girl saying no if you've opened properly.

great story, you might have to shorten it at parts or strengthen some elements of it depending on when and whatfor you use it. its interesting and it conveys your identity in a nice way. mystery uses or used a similiar story I think its described in his somewhat obsolete book "venusian arts".

balloon modeling for day2 sounds great! can you give me some names of cooler balloons, im kind of getting tired of making dogs and bicycles?

Trece - Thanks for the headsup, I may use the story if the topic swings round that way. Or I could swing it that way deliberately depending how I feel :P
I haven't read mystery's book. Actually I haven't even read The Game yet, or MM.

But my fave balloon, which is very simple is a teddy bear.
SImply make 7 small twists (each bubble being the same size) and then twist it so that you have 2 bubbles, then a ring/loop of 5 bubbles, then the rest of the balloon.
Then, put 1 of the 2 bubbles (the one on the end) through the loop. Then twist lock (name?) the 2 each side to make ears, and also locking it all i place.

Hope that makes sense. Then just make the body like a dog.

Or you could do what I do and make a flower, and wrap the teddy around the stem of the flower :)

Oh also if you are doing it for kids, a sword goes down very well every time :) Also make random twists and call it a hat lol as long as it has a huge loop youre fine :)

Juggling works great! I picked up a set of juggling balls that have LED light inside and when they are turned on they rotate through the colours of the rainbow. You can pick some up off of www.homeofpoi.com the ones with the beads in them are nicely weighted, but the ones without glow nicer, so if you don't mind light balls go with those. I had these with me last weekend when we went to a club and I was juggling on the patio and people love it. I did it at the subway station and when I got onto the train and everyone on in the car was singing the classic circus music while I juggled.

Its so easy to get yourself into a group by juggling as they will see what you are doing and when the balls are glowing it is very eye catching to sober people, let alone drunk ones. Then they start asking if they can try (or you ask if anyone can juggle and 90% of the time someone can, or will want to try). Even if the person is a better juggler than you, you just chum up to him more and ignore your target and act like you wanna learn some new tricks. My only problem at the moment is I need to get some sort of bag that I can take into the clubs with manditory coat check.

Hehe :) He is different from the dogs, giraffes and all other dog variations, which is why I like him :)

Have fun!
