there is a girl that I am trying to get with, close with, etc. It's obvious that we are attracted to eachother, but obviously I don't want to appear to be giving in to her, becoming predictable, etc.

Is it an effective technique to tell her something along the lines of "oh it won't work out", or telling her that right now isn't the best time for a relationship, or it needs to be more on my terms, etc.

Is that an effective way to make myself a challenge, or will that push her away for good?

Depending on the level of attraction between you two and her alone...If she is clingy then she will follow you around like a little lost puppy dog, but if she isnt clingy then that will push her away.

How about the tried and tested, "I don't think you and I would work out, we're far too similar... we'd just fight all the time and I'd win!"

I always liked that one, and girls respond to it really well cos it's playful and she might even try and come up with reasons why you would work out, thus doing all the work for you.
