I relatively new to pick up.. Although ive read a lot and researched, only recently have a actually started using it.. I've had a couple of success stories, however Ive found that I can run openers, and I know loads of DHV routines, I just can't seem to transition smoothly from one to the other..

It's like I know the individual scenes, I just need editting and fine tuning before the feature film is ready..

So what I'm asking, is how to transition from opener, to DHV, to isolating the target..

I'd highly recommend if that is what you want to accomplish to re-read Mystery Method. Because that is actually a lot of ground to cover. Well, transitioning from the opener to DHV is pretty simple. Just go with a question of "How do you all know each other?" It helps you figure out set logistics, puts the ball in their court for a moment, and breaks the topics. Then it's as simple as one of these phrases followed by your DHV stories.

"Oh that reminds me..."
"Get this..."
"You are going to believe me but..."
"Oh my god, check this out..."

It's just a few words to grab their attention and transition you into your next DHV.

As far as getting to isolation. DHV stories and things like that get you most of the way there but you also have to have the "vibe" that its on. It also involves a fair amount of dynamics with controlling the rest of the set.

I'm going to paraphrase here but you'll want to tell your girl that you want to talk to her a bit more in private or you have something cool to show her. Then tell the group where you are going... Again tell them don't ask permission... It helps if you literally point to where you are going so they know exactly where she is and they don't freak out later cause some new weird guy has left with their friend, and try to come find you. Stay within eye contact of the group! This is huge. I'll explain in a sec.

"I'm going to borrow your friend for a moment...(pointing) we'll just be right over there for a few minutes." Then just take her hand and lead her away.

Ensure when you do this the "whole" group is there if possible. Here is what happens sometimes. Let's say one of the more protective members of the group goes to the bathroom her best girlfriend. And you go to isolate. When she comes back to the group she may freak out and say, "where's XXX?" If they didn't know where you were they'd say "I don't know..." She'd freak out wondering all the possibilites of her friend being raped or killed...she'll come find her and take her from you.

In the alternative case she comes back from the bathroom her friends can point to where she is and its no big deal. She can see you from across the room and she knows her friend is ok. But you still have isolation cause you are across the room away from the group one on one.

I am paraphrasing here but hitting the high points of how to properly isolate and control the group so they don't screw you up later. :) Remember, don't stay isolated at first for all that long maybe 5 minutes or so and return her to the group. This helps build the groups trust with you and hers as well. Later you can isolate longer, and maybe even bounce her to another venue. :)

Peace,

Jon
