My preferred method is to go direct on the street because it means you don’t need to have an opener. This is how I’d do it *you see her as she’s walking towards you and make eye contact. As you get about 6 feet away from her you slow down, plant you feet in the ground and use both hands to do a stop gesture* ‘Whoa, hold on [gets her to slow down]. I just have to say, *slight pause for tension* I saw you walking down the street, and I thought you were gorgeous, and I just had to stop you and say ‘hi’. The difficult bit is getting her to stop. To do this you need to make it very clear than you’re going to stop her. If you’re clear, she’ll stop. The more hurried someone is, the more force you have to stop them with. If they are on their way to a meeting you’re going to need a lot. If they’re a tourist wandering through a park you won’t. However, you might find that you haven’t though fast enough to give yourself enough time to stop the girl as she’s walking towards you. What I’d do then is walk past her, turn around and break into a jog to catch her up. You can either get alongside her and open or run in front as in the first way I mentioned. I’ve found that it’s much better to stop someone than to try to talk to them from the side. It’s awkward and you can’t think about talking and not walking into people coming the other way at the same time. Also, people won’t stop if you open them from the side, they’ll keep walking and you’ll have to hook them very fast or else they’ll walk away. Hence I’d prefer to run up from behind and then loop around in front of her giving her enough distance to know that you’re there. That way you stop her, pause to let her know you’ve stopped her, then open. If you come in just from the side you’ll scare her and she won’t stop. It’s quite funny actually, but not a great opening method. If you’re standing chatting, rather than walking, I find it easier because you know what to do with your body language, which you can’t do whilst moving. So spot the girl, run after her and stop her clearly. |
