Post subject:  dealing with eye contact

lately ive been much more conciously aware of my eye contact in all sorts of social interactions, not just pick up, and im working on improving it. it's quite powerful the subtleties of the messages that can be conveyed by your eyes. i was wondering how people deal with the issue where you spot a HB from a distance as you both approach each other (ie. walking down the sidewalk)
if you watch her the whole way up then it can get very awkward when you are right next to each other and you've been grinning at her for a full minute
at the same time, i also dont think it's the best idea to avoid eye contact and then look at her suddenly when she's close enough. what are your techniques for acting as naturally as possible as if she's just caught your eye?

I usually don't try holding eye contact until I can see the whites of their eyes. There's no reason you should be staring someone down from like a block away trying to maintain eye contact. If you wait until they're pretty close to you to try locking eyes, it will be a lot less weird for maintaining eye contact, flashing a smile, and not looking away until they do. If both of you keep eye contact beyond her passing your shoulder, then it's on!
