Post subject:  Language barrier

Where I'm living, english isn't the first language and I don't speak the local language. Most of the young people would have a good level of English, definitely enough to hold conversation.

So, I can't just go up to a girl and use the openers here because locals hate when you just presume they are happy to speak your language.

So what would you recommend for crossing this language barrier?

Do I always first ask them "Do you speak English?" (in their language), and what nice openers could I use to take it from there? I actually live here, I'm not just passing through so saying things like "I'm trying to find the tourist office" won't fly.

Thanks!

WHAT COUNTRY are you in? The local culture can make a big difference on how you talk to them (though you're still opening them regardless).

Learn a few greetings in the language AT LEAST. Even if you learn more, use them and then ask her if she speaks English. Explain you are a foreigner, and would appreciate it if someone showed you around... trust me, if you go this route, and work on your accent, then you will come across as a foreigner who is culturally aware and for him, learning other languages is no big deal. You look more exotic, as well as enlightened. Plus, many girls will be willing to help out a foreign guy in need of familiarity with the place. And then you can begin attraction in English.

I don't know if that applies to your situation or not, please elaborate what it is that you do there.

I'm living in Berlin at the moment. The etiquette wouldn't be vastly different to other Western countries, but from what I've read here, there's a lot of canned material that just wouldn't work well here due to cultural differences. But I guess that goes for Europe in general.

I have been here for a while now, so I don't need someone to show me around. It's a good opener, but it's not really suitable in my case since I live in the city.

Cheers
