Okay so I really think that approaching a girl by asking her if she has a lighter isn't a good way to start a conversation. It is probably the most worn out approach technique.
On the other hand if an attractive girl asks YOU for a lighter it seems like such a waste to just give it to her and not try anything.
So my question is, do you guys have any suggestion on how to start a conversation from there? Lets, off course, stay away from all the "What will I get in return?" or "I'm sorry, I only lend things to hot girls ... joke*" as there a pretty lame ...

Make her qualify for the lighter.

"You can use it if you tell me three cool things about yourself."

I personally would NEVER do that. The fact is theres so many lads that can just give her a lighter why would she want to spend time explaining herself to you? Its to early for qualification i think.

I would say something like
Me-Sure*give her lighter* while your here quick question....
and go into your normal routine or whatever opener you want to use.

She is basicly opening you.

Or if you go direct i use
Me- Wow i just about to come over to you and claim i needed a light to start a conversation with you!
Her- *laugh*
Me- No but seriously your extremely cute..who are you?

Making the target qualify for the lighter gives her the impression that you have high social value. She'll be thinking: "Who is this guy with the balls to not give me what I want when I want it?" You could bump it down to "Tell me one cool thing about yourself." if that would would make you more comfortable, but I would definitely make her qualify.

I would go more direct, something like this:

Me: I only lend my lighter to cute girls, are you cute?
"if she says yes"
Me: Let me see "stare at her for a while with a little smile" then
Me: okay i think you're cute "lend her your lighter", what's your name?
then proceed...
"if no"
Me: i was just kidding, actually I think you're cute! "lend her your lighter" then ask her name then proceed with your normal routine
