Thing is you can tell them to fuck off, cus you lose your job.
Ive never been good at thinking on the spot with witty comebacks and responses. I think the reason for this is when i was picked on when i was young i didnt like the way it made me feel so i never used to think of insults to give back cus i didnt want others to feel the same way. lame i know. but seems that its a skill i have lost...
you thoughts...

Try reading "How to Win Friends and Influence People", it's a great book, also you can adapt it to your game.
One example is trying to win the person, not like a puppy, but like an alpha male. You have to make them qualify to you by making a comment about something you think they're proud of, that'll make you a respected person because people don't disrespect someone they're trying to impress.

"Hey, ya know I don't think I am familiar enough with StupidstereoA. Why don't I go real quick and get someone who is far more capable to help you."
Then go and get your manager.
You can tell your manager "This guy said he wanted someone more knowledgable but I really think he just wants to buy something from someone more important. So I figured I would come and get you."
Everyone likes to feel important. This way, the customer gets helped by a Manager and the manager gets the impression that he is important to you. Oh AND if a customer asks it kinda is part of a manager's job to go take care of him anyway. Sooo most of the time a manager will do it and tada you are free of the customer with a built-in shoulder-chip.
You can also shove off prickish male customers to a sexy female... that works too. OR if your manager won't come, you just go get another staff member who is now "More knowledgable" than you. Most will do it with an easy "Hey Mike, You know more about Stupidstereos than me...." wait for a nod from him then say "Well this guy reallly needs some help."
Hope this helps

best advice i've ever gotten is that the customer is pretty much never right, but you gotta make em feel like they're right

Immediately take control of the situation:
Customer: BLAH BLAH BLAH!
You: Stop. (Calm Manner) Sir/Mam I'm trying to help You. But your not helping "our" problem any bit by losing control of yourself. Now let's work this out "together".
When you say this in a polite but authoritative manner your taking control of the situation and making (framing?) it so that its not them complaining about something the company did. Rather they realize they're working against themselves. As well, you control the situation by using the key words "our" and "together", and you make the company/manufacturer/other salesman the enemy and your their ally.
I've shutdown some pretty intense arguments like this and they almost always apologize (DLV) for acting out. But of course their will always be dicks in the retail biz.
