The whole point of wings is you take turns approaching. Otherwise just go out solo and get better at isolating.
I can see what you mean about it being a '2 way street.' The guy is actually probably one of the better wings I've had over the last 5 - 6 years and I always felt like I wasn't occupying his obstacles well enough or building his value up enough in comparison to how much he helped me with most of the sets. A good example is the copy and pasted story below from my blog where I write down every lay report since losing my virginity. Over the last year he'd become one of my better friends too but unfortunately he's just moved elsewhere so if someone reading this needs a wing then feel free to message me on here  I'm far from the best and quite often when I learn something new, I find myself making old mistakes again. I don't base my night on how many sets I've opened or closed but instead on how much fun I had in each one and with my surrounding company. Also, I take my PhD research and rowing quite seriously so I often go out during the weekdays and if I go out on the weekend, I wouldn't stay out too late.

It is a Tuesday afternoon and my phone starts to ring. As soon as I saw who the caller was, I knew it was going to be a proposition to go out and practice our pick up skills on Nottingham's prettiest.
It started off with a typical evening. I finished rowing, showered, ate and we hit town. At first we hit a dive bar with lots of emo chicks. Maybe we were targeting the wrong audience here as although the girls were friendlier, it seemed to be difficult to escalate the situation any further than just words because they were too busy pretending to have a good time or doing what emo girls do. After failing for two hours, we finally gave in and went to an environment more suited for us.. BAA BAR!
Here Bek was doing quite well. Every set he spoke to responded well and every set he spoke to included the hottest girls in the bar. Unfortunately he didn't manage to escalate things further than that.. Then eventually arose a situation where my help was needed. He used the casual, indirect approach of asking them to take a picture of us. In order to not seem desperate, the trick is to have a quick chat, make them laugh and while they're on a high, and LEAVE! This will usually leave a good impression in their minds so when you bump into them again a short period later, they'll remember you as the funny, charismatic guy who didn't have an agenda of sex...
For once, this worked like a treat and when Bek re-opened the two girls, they were friendly to him. I thought this was about time to help him out and tried to occupy the obstacle (her friend). This part is usually quite simple and something like:
1. Start talking to the obstacle
2. Make her enjoy being around you
3. Turn her around so that her friend is just about in the obstacle's peripheral vision. This way she still feels safe because her friend is in the vicinity.
4. Make her laugh and while she's having a fun time, turn her around completely.
5. If on the dance floor, wait for a moment so that it looks like the original target is having either a very good time or when she's kissing him. When this happens, spin her 360 degrees so she catches a glimpse of her friend either laughing or being sexual.
6. This will make the obstacle either want to pull you to get back on even ground with the obstacle or give them a few more minutes as she doesn't want to be rude by spoiling their fun time.
Somehow the tables turned and I ended up being the one to pull while Bek was keeping the original target occupied. I took her away, had fun chats on the sofas, found her friend again, her friend pulled someone else, went home with someone other than Bek, I took this as a hint and took mine home too.
