Post subject:  What is motivation?

Spawned from a conversation between myself kasabi and lyrical dream.

What is it, What does it consist of, How do you affect it?

Try and avoid long winded rambling posts, other than that, the floor is open.

I can go on and on and on about this subject - even though I like to say

"Motivation carries you, while determination lifts you up."

But yeah - a lot of debating or discussion is possible about this one word. What is actually "motivation".

When there is a difference between your current situation and your ideal situation, i.e something is identified that needs to be done/acquired. the motivation or 'drive' comes in when the pleasure associated with the want or need for this 'thing' outweighs any difulcties in getting it or visa versa, there is more pain associated with NOT doing/getting it than there is with doing/getting it.

PUA example

For people who learn PUA theniques AND put them into practice in real situations.

Motivation- 2 mind sets

1. learning the social skills needed to meet and attract women and the happiness this could bring outweighs any of the pain that could occur i.e having to face fears e.g rejection

2. NOT learning the social skills needed to meet and attract women will lead to more pain than any possible fears faced or any rejection that could happen whilst practising the material.

2nd mindset would result in higher 'drive' (motivation)

For people who learn PUA theniques AND DO NOT put them into practice in real situations

Lack of motivation-2 mindsets

1. learning the social skills needed to meet and attract women would lead to MORE pain in having to face fears and rejection than any happiness that would arise from being able to meet and attract women.

2. learning the social skills needed to meet and attract women would lead to MORE pain in having to face fears and rejection than any pain that would arise from NOT practicing the material e.g loneliness i.e pain associated with rejection>>pain associated with loneliness

This has been the most clear cut and effective answer.

The next step is to find out, what causes and creates motivation, what are it's components.

My wild guess is...

Self esteem
Self efficacy
Ability to look towards the rewards in order to get past costs.

Determination

Motivation in my business studies class was defined as "the reason to do something", give people a reason (that corresponds to their beliefs and lifestyle) and they are motivated.

Determination is the will power in doing something and focused, determination is like getting back up after being hit down, putting other things aside to tackle your goals.

Motivation is like being at the start of the track and you're pumped, jogging on the spot, youre ready, your mind wants it and determination is actually running the distance till the end, getting passed the fatigue and the brick wall.

Thats just my interpretation.

@shahanshah well put!

For me motivation is what gets me going in the morning

Why do you get up for work every morning?
for example you might enjoy working with a co-worker, something about your work which you love/enjoy.
What ever the answer you have I believe that is your motivation

Now Determination is the drive you need to succeed in your goals
as shahanshah put it the will power
Quote:
Motivation carries you, while determination lifts you up.
I would have said this the other way around

"Motivation lifts you up, while determination carries you on"

Motivation can also come from support, like a running partner who will motivate you and support you whilst you run together which will carry you to keep on running

Straight out of a dictionary. (a good short reply)

Motive = what induces a person to act.

Straight out of a dictionary.

Motivation is a word that describes an unseen (force) You can not see it.
But without it not much would get done.

My old university lecturer had a great way of explaining anything you can't see by supplanting an object and then descibing that.

So here goes.

I PICTURE a small golden object spinning SLOWLY in space called MOTIVATION.

In order for it to spin faster other things have to happen.

1. Desire

This is something that greatly effects the spinning golden object.
Along with
2. Ambition

The desired something.

3. Fame/power/wisdom/glory etc.

4. A reason to want it ?

My only discovery is that you need a balanced amount of it.
To little and you won't achieve much.
To much and you will be overburdened.

But as for the BIG QUESTION why some people are more motivated than others is very difficult to answer.
The smartest guy i ever new told me how much money he had wasted sending employee's on motivation/charater building exercises.
He learnt that is was a waste of time.
JUST EMPLOY MOTIVATED PEOPLE.

But why some people are more motivated than others is not very well understood.

I believe it stems from self belief and strong desire.
Or is it reason ?
It seems the biggest motivator nowerdays is MONEY!!!!!!!

Going back now to my little spinning golden object.

Lets think of MYSTERY and his desire to get laid.
For years he went to that shopping mall in canada getting nowhere.
What kept motivating him to do it?
When most guys would have given up!

1. money nah
2. getting laid.
3. sense or worth
4. achieving something.
5. hb 10's
6. self belief
7. to prove something to himself.
8. something else.
hrmmm.

A good question Fin.
I do not think though i have got my point accross as i would like having read it over now a few times.

But hey.

Motivation to me is the striving to learn and achieve a goal you first thought impossible and step by step through learning from those who have achieved that goal to accomplish and master it.
Jobs a good one- Put your mind to it and you can acheive anything.

In my opinion knowing that your action will benefit you creates motivation and experiencing the gains of your work builds up the motivation. So I'm guessing the best way to build up motivation is to have smaller goals instead of a huge one where its difficult to notice or experience the gains of your action.

Motivation - an emotional reason or rationale to induce some kind of change.
ie., one does not enjoy their current circumstances, and they have a vision of where they want to be.

- motivation is often temporary (ex. the feeling you get when watching Rocky, or reading The Game)
- lasting motivation is indeed the only motivation that is effective in producing change. This is much harder to acquire.

What creates and leads to motivation?

- complete and utter dissatisfaction with one's current situation
- the desire to make a change
- and, like Fin mentioned,
*Ability to look towards the rewards in order to get past costs.*
Or, the ability to see past the short term negative to the long term positive.
