Post subject:  HS - Joining the track team

Good idea? i saw the team the other day and it consisted mostly of all jocks. Now I never run.... ever. So im gunna tell the coach that im going to throw shot put. Do you guys think that this is a good opportunity to build my social proof at my HS?

hmmm, it depends on your high school.

what do you want to be known for in high school?
if you wanna be the jock, yea, then being on your high school team can help that.
though if you're not good enough to get noticed it won't exactly build your social proof that much?
i remember being on my high school football and volleyball team and it was great, it was better than p.e. that's for sure, it didn't help scoring with girls, but it did help me meet more people and be more confident and outgoing.

figure out what you want to be and just be that.
maybe you can learn to breakdance if you don't know already, couple sweet moves at a high school dance and you'll be the shit.
i always thought those people were cool...

Track is a great way to get in shape and build confidence so I think it's a good move. I was on the track team in HS... mainly because it was a no cut sport. hahaha But yeah I did the 100, 200, and 4x400.

One thing you could do on the track team is this:

A track uniform shorts are really freaking short. Most guys will wear compression shorts underneath, because your boxers will literally stick out. Don't wear any underwear and ask a girl to help you stretch. That way she'll definitely see your junk.

Nice. Good luck

Look man stop trying to thing what can raise your social proof. The thing that you should be focusing at is what you like? what motivates YOU? not what can make you "cooler" in the eyes of other people. YOU should begin by find the real YOU. Im not saying you should not do it, it could even open a new passion for you but go into it with a different mindset.

If you're doing track, do the short distance stuff...like 100 meter or 200 meter. Check out the physiques of the people doing the sprints versus the long distance marathons and you'll know what I'm talking about.

Also, you can do the field part of it too if you like, just be careful not to hit yourself or anyone else with the shot put, discus, or javelin. Oh, and work your other arm too (these events utilize only one arm).

in my experience with track and field in high school, i moved up from a slightly above average sprinter to number 2 in my school. thats really a statement because i go to a large school that has dominated the conference in track for years. we are ranked very well in the state.

things i have found:
1 - u get in great shape, great gains if youre in other sports
2 - u get a good looking body if you lift
3 - big boost in confidence
4 - and make new friends which leads to more friends after that
5 - social status skyrockets if youre good at what you

i wouldve never guessed id be where i am now. you have to set your goals high and work your ass off. great thing is its a passion now and i get all this other stuff with it. i do have girls talking to me during school about track and how im doing now. its crazy, and its still early in the season!

as for being a thrower, i dont really know, if youre still kinda young you can try whatever and find your niche. just dont forget, becuz youre slow now doesnt mean next year you cant be a varsity sprinter. trick is work the off season and give it your all or you wont get anything out of it.

good luck

just find something you like become good at it then make it public as much as you can some things you can do are join teams, parkour (learn how to do a backflip and do one in school thatll get some attention and people will come over and ask how did you do that etc) skateboarding can earn some friends and stuff, if you dont know what you like go out there and do it all meet loads of new people and get fitter genrally

but sure why not join the track team but practise running a bit first at least start at average to everyone else if it doesent work out you can just quit anyway. in my oppinion teams are better you have to work together otherwise youll lose

Dude, take weight-lifting. That's a great way to build social proof. Most guys who take weight-lifting are jocks or tough guys, so you give yourself a way to become acquainted with them. You'll have access to jocks from all types of sports. If they don't warm up to you, just work your butt off.

As you get stronger, they'll soften up to you. Even though they might not act like it, every guy in the room is keeping track of how much everyone else puts up. They'll know you're there; just don't be the weakest guy in the room. If any girl notices you walking around, there'll be a good chance some jock in her group will know you. He'll tell her, "Oh yeah, he's in my weight-lifting class. He lifts pretty well for his weight." Social proof right there, since that guy talked about you in a respectful manner.

The problem with sports is that they'll actually hurt your reputation if you turn out not to be that good. You don't have to worry about that with weight-lifting. No skill necessary - just proper form. Plus, you'll look great after a few semesters. Just make sure you're eating properly and getting enough sleep. Protein shakes are a must. I guarantee you that your confidence will shoot up.

yeah i run track in high school and I think it has really helped me with girls. Whenever i warm up or when i do the stretches I talk to whatever girls are around me boosting confidence. I think that joining will help you

dude, track is quite literally the sh**! Love it, been loving it for around 6 years now (middle school). This year I'm getting smoked in the 100 and the other sprints but I'm focusing on pole vault. pretty sick stuff. it really depends on if you can find your niche and if you want to work to be good. track is a great SPAM for running, totally no haters and the inital commitment (the pain from running) kinda binds the team together. I know some people through track I would never have hung with.

but as they guys before me have already said, track will get you in shape, so long as you try, and you will try because everyone else is and the last thing you want to do is let the team down.

p.s. I just got off a track meet today and PR'ed in the vault, 9' W00T!!!

It depends. Do you enjoy track? It doesn't matter if being a jock is cool if you do not enjoy doing it.

Plus at my school, no one gives a crap about the Jocks, so people only do it if they enjoy it.
