Try-Hard: A guy who tries too hard to win the approval of others.

This character trait reminds me of a cross between Mr. Furley and Larry from Three's Company

The following are examples of disqualifying the positive:

You believe that you’re worthless and unlovable. You respond to a work
promotion by thinking, ‘This doesn’t count, because anyone could get
this sort of thing.’ The result: Instead of feeling pleased, you feel quite
disappointed.

You think you’re pathetic and feel low. A friend tells you you’re a very
good friend, but you disqualify this in your mind by thinking, ‘She’s only
saying that because she feels sorry for me. I really am pathetic.’

How would you handle the situation?

For why purpose exactly? CBT has nothing whatsoever to do with pickup unless it is to address your own limiting or dysfunctional beliefs.

Comparatively CBT is quite similar to NLP, but with CBT there has been substatiated peer-reviewed research. "NLP is not a science. It was not developed using the standard scientific method in the sense that its basic assumptions, models, and theories have, for the most part, never been tested scientifically. Instead, NLP has been compared to an engineering discipline in that it seeks what works rather trying to develop theory or find what is true in a rigorously testable sense. It is also comparable to heuristic problem-solving methods, in that the methods of NLP are tools for uncovering information and refining approaches, and the information uncovered is simultaneously information about the landscape as well as refinements to the heuristic algorithm which can help better identify what a solution might look like, and to find optimal 'next steps' to any of the many possible solutions.

However, this does not mean that NLP cannot be tested scientifically, especially as it relates to therapy. In this sense NLP can be considered to be a black box in that, while the internal workings may be mysterious, the quality of the output (results) may be evaluated statistically."

How exactly is NLP, which is psuedo science at best, similar to CBT? I am a clinical counsellor and I'm quite curious how you rationalize this statement.

It can be, just as it can be helpful for a lot of things, but most people don't know how to apply it. It can certainly be effective in addressing underlying maladaptive/limiting core beliefs that may be holding you back in life (e.g., cognitive distortions, catastrophizing, fortune telling, mind reading, etc.).

Let's see ... Would you agree that Cognitive approaches such as CBT and NLP are both approaches used to promote positive change in individuals?

Both these therapy approaches are practical and focused on problem solving in order to meet therapy goals. Sessions are more structured and less free flowing.

Ya know void, at some point in our lives, something’s going to go a bit wrong with our bodies. So why on
earth do we as humans assume that our minds and emotions should be above the odd hiccup, upset, or even more serious difficulty?

Btw, regardless of whether you're currently working with a psychotherapist or other mental health professional.you don't have to be in therapy per se to gain from the benefits of CBT.

There's nothing remotely similar about the two approaches, hence my being perplexed by your vague statement.

NLP teaches and encourage you to use always the best strategy to solve a problem... If CBT is the best strategy known so far to address and solve certain problems, I do not know why a good NLP practitioner would not use it.

I really do not see why they seem to be mutually exclusive to some people.
