Post subject:  Negged a pretty girl-went down like a lead ballon!
Well it did to start with... Personally I thought it was a fucking great neg!!!

5 girls sitting at a table, me and my mate go and sit with them, the one next to me (pretty girl) was wearing a leopard print dress, I said "aaah takes a special girl to be able to pull that look off"

Her mates laughed then got a bit angry when they realized I'd genuinely upset her!!

Turns out she had really bad confidence issues as she was recently single because of an abusive ex- whoops!

That's a bit more of an insult than a neg. You might have been able to pull the set out had it not been for her past issues. Be careful with anything that might actually come close to insulting the way she looks. It's better to neg on social issues. :)

Yeah lesson learnt! I said it cocky funny though hoping she would pick up on the fact I wasn't saying she couldn't pull it off- just didn't say she had!

Later on I chatted to her again, reassured her she shouldn't have confidence issues and that she seemed like a cool girl and we got on fine after that

I don't know how upset she got, but if she had only like a sad face "all of a sudden", you could have put your arm around her and something like:

"CHeer up, it's only a joke (wait a couple of seconds the time she looks up to you) ... although I never did told you you could" and then laugh expressively to make her understand you're kidding and that she should at least smile.

Agreed. You should have pulled in her in with your arm while you delivered that. Then push her away when you compliment her.
