I just finished reading King Warrior Magician Lover. I couldn't put it down and now I'm going through it a second time. I am writing down some thoughts and really letting these ideas sink in because I feel this is a very important book. To me it's life-changing.

Basically King Warrior Magician Lover are the four archetypes of the mature masculine. There are also four archetypes of the immature masculine. According to Carl Jung, the famous Swiss psychologist whose theories this book is based on, all of these archetypes are found in every man. They are part of the "collective unconscious" we all share. Jung justifies this idea by referring to the following:
  • Similarities between the dreams of patients in psychotherapy.
  • Similarities in the behaviors of societies completely disconnected from each other.
  • Similarities between different mythologies and religions of societies completely disconnected from each other.
The point is that different people have suppressed some archetypes more than others. There are several reasons for this, but it has mostly to do with upbringing. It is especially worrying that many (most?) of us seem to be stuck in "boy psychology," that is we never grew up to be men and to express our mature archetypes (King Warrior Magician Lover) fully if at all. This has consequences for us in all aspects of our lives, not the least of which is our interactions with women and our intimate relationships.

Jung invites us not to repress our immature archetypes as they will never truly go away and they do possess positive qualities. They should instead be built upon and transcended by the mature. I know this sounds pretty abstract, but it should make more sense after I describe the first archetype everyone accesses, the Divine Child (immature), and how it relates to the last archetype to be fully realized, the King (mature). This will be coming up in my next post, but for now I will let this info sink in and present a list of each immature archetype and which mature archetype it should eventually lead to. The immature archetypes are commonly accessed in the order listed, but not always. I think the mature archetypes are accessed more randomly, but I'm pretty sure the King is always the last.
  1. Divine Child -> King
  2. Precocious Child -> Magician
  3. Oedipal Child -> Lover
  4. Hero -> Warrior

THE DIVINE CHILD

As I've written the King is the last archetype to be accessed and that makes sense as it seems to me that all four of the other mature archetypes must be in place first. In addition the mature energy of the King is born from the immature energy of the Divine Child so this one immature energy must also be fully realized and acknowleged before it can be transcended.

The Divine Child vs the King

The Divine Child
Perceives himself as all-powerful and at the center of the universe -- yet at the same time he is totally helpless and weak." This is the actual experience of a baby who doesn't know his boundaries, is the center of the universe for his parents and is totally helpless and weak without them.

The King
Is all-powerful (but compassionate), the center of his kingdom (as opposed to the universe / he is humble and maintains order in his "kingdom" or life) and, since he has the other archetypes in place, is not helpless and weak -- although a traditional King has his warriors, magicians and lovers who serve him as well.

Positive qualities of the Divine Child

Although even the fully realized Divine Child may have traits we perceive as negative (as described above) he also has many positive qualities:
  • Freshness / change (obviously a child is "new" to the world)
  • Creativity (children tend to be more creative than adults)
  • Harmony (a child brings the family together around him)
  • Enthusiasm for life (life has just begun, the possibilities are endless)
  • Keeping us "young at heart" (a child is young of course)
To summarize this section we can think of the Divine Child as the aspect within ourselves that keeps us from being the average "gray-normal." Fuck the nice car, the wife and kids, the decent-paying job. Fuck the debt that comes with it, fuck the cheating wife and kids that disrespect you, fuck that job for which you have absolutely 0 passion. The Divine Child is about expressing yourself and seeing where it takes you.

The shadow of the Divine Child
I will not write too much about the shadow of the different archetypes. It is important to know that it is composed of two polarities, one passive and one aggressive. For example, the Divine Child's passive polarity is the Weakling Prince and its aggressive polarity is the High Chair Tyrant. Even though they are opposites, some of the traits are the same for both polarities -- they are just expressed differently. For example, both polarities of the Divine Child's shadow are focused on a sense of entitlement and of taking instead of giving. But while the High Chair Tyrant is very vocal and aggressive about it, the Weakling Prince is more subtle and manipulating in his methods. Moreover polarities may occasionally shift, especially in those with bipolar disorders.

The Divine Child in the PUA world
When we start changing our lives, as many of us are doing after getting into pickup artistry, we experience a freshness and a change in our way of being. We start trying out new methods and approaches, being creative and adapting to situations. We start bringing people together (not necessarily just us and the HB, but maybe also others in the club or wherever -- social proofing). We begin developing an enthusiasm for life as we see that we are capable of more than we knew. We go beyond the boundaries we had previously set for ourselves. Hopefully we loosen up and become more "young at heart" in general.

But just as in the stories of Jesus, Zoroaster or Moses, their lives were threatened while they were still helpless and weak (Divine Children). And we have probably experienced this as we started exploring our own "divinity." Perhaps those who knew us as being a certain way are uncomfortable with seeing us acting in a way incongruent with who they think we are. Perhaps we have not developed our skills enough and look foolish in our pickup attempts. People will make it known and they will try to bring us down. When this starts happening it means we're on to something. This is not the time to let others bring us down; it is time to persevere and protect the child as best we can by expressing the other archetypes as best we can. For example, the Warrior will protect the child by being focused on the mission and keeping his composure despite the attacks on the child. He knows in advance what he has to do and how he has to act. The Magician will examine the situation afterwards and learn from his mistakes. And in this way the child will grow along with the other archetypes. Protect the child and persevere.

THE PRECOCIOUS CHILD
The Precocious Child is the immature archetype that gives rise to the mature Magician.

The Precocious Child vs the Magician
The Precocious Child is basically a less evolved version of the Magician. He has many interests but may not have specialized in anything yet (one of the hallmarks of the Magician is spending large amounts of time, energy and money to acquire special knowledge and skills). Although the Precocious Child is eager to help others with his unique knowledge and skills, he must be careful not to overestimate himself as this may do more harm than good.

Positive qualities of the Precocious Child
  • Talented
  • Curious
  • Adventurous
  • Helpful
  • Reflective / introspective
The shadow of the Precocious Child
The aggressive polarity of the Precocious Child's shadow is the Know-It-All Trickster. He believes himself superior and is not afraid to express this. Think of a businessman who is too busy and important to talk to you. He is also an expert at tricking others into unfortunate situations. He has some knowledge or skills that he believes make him superior to others, but he is actually disconnected from the Divine Child. His energy comes from envy -- the Know-It-All Trickster envies the specialness, beauty and creativity of others.

The boy (or man) who is under the power of the other pole of the dysfunctional Shadow of the Precocious Child, the naive Dummy, is also disconnected from his Divine Child. But in contrast to the Know-It-All Trickster, he is unresponsive and dull. Instead of ridiculing others, he is ridiculed. He may, however, be far brighter than he shows. His behavior may mask a hidden grandiosity that feels itself too important and too vulnerable to come into the world. This is not right. The Dummy must let go of his reservations. He must get in touch with the Divine Child and learn to express himself.

The Precocious Child in the PUA world
The Precocious Child, especially in its aggressive polarity, has a talent for deflating egos. For example, the Know-It-All Trickster will try to bring anyone down. Sometimes this is deserved and will be of service to the "victim" who also may think too much of himself. The mature Magician will only ever do this with good intentions. The point is that we will sometimes encounter Know-It-All Tricksters when we are talking to a woman. These are the guys that will approach you and try to shift the woman's attention to himself by bringing you down. Some of these guys could never approach a woman any other way and are envious of you for having the balls, and maybe an enthusiasm and creativity they don't have. They are not in touch with the Divine Child. Don't be that guy.

As a man fully in touch with his Precocious Child you may yourself have a talent for deflating egos. I'm talking about dealing with bitch shields. A woman may act like she is too important to talk to you, but if you can manage to deflate her ego and bring her down to earth, you will be on the right path.

Adventurous: you have to be adventurous when trying to pick up women.

Curious: be interested to be interesting. If you are curious about the woman you are talking to, you will talk less. Women like to talk and you will learn more about her while keeping yourself mysterious. Even being interested in your environment can help you here. If you notice unique things about the room or the people in it, you have something to talk about besides "so what do you do?"

Reflective / Introspective: what did you do right in your approach? What went wrong? Is the issue deeper? Do you need to work on certain aspects of yourself as a person?

Helpful: give feedback to your wing.

I can go on and on. As you can see it's extremely important to have a connection to your Precocious Child in the pickup world.

THE OEDIPAL CHILD
The Oedipal Child is the immature archetype that gives rise to the mature energy of the Lover.

All the immature masculine energies are overly tied, one way or another, to Mother (both biological and through her the spiritual Mother of us all -- the yin to the male God's yang), and are deficient in their experience of the nurturing and mature masculine. This is especially true for the Oedipal Child.

The Oedipal Child vs the Lover
Whereas the Lover has a general appetite for life and experiences a general connectedness and compassion to all living things, the Oedipal Child is overly focused on his relationships with women. This leads to a limited experience of the oneness of all living things. It also means that the Oedipal Child is not as sensitive to the environment and experiences of life as the Lover. In other words, he is not in touch with his senses and feelings to the same degree that the Lover is.

Positive qualities of the Oedipal Child
  • Passionate
  • Appreciation or at least a sense wonder for connectedness between all living things
  • Warm / related / affectionate
  • Spirituality (limited, through connectedness with the Great Mother)
The shadow of the Oedipal Child
Both polarities of the Oedipal Child's shadow subconsciously long for union with the love and nurture of the perfect Mother Goddess -- the yin to the Father God's yang. This causes him to see all women as Goddesses and to have unrealistic expectations of them.

The aggressive polarity is the Mama's Boy. His impossible expectations of women will leave him unsatisfied with any woman. He will eternally move from woman to woman in search of perfection. He does not want to take the responsibility needed to have a meaningful union with a mortal woman. Moreover, he may be a compulsive masturbator and have an obsession with pornography. The explanation is that he wants to experience all women, or rather a union with the Mother Goddess in her infinity of female forms.

The passive polarity is the Dreamer. By experiencing women as Goddesses he feels unworthy and thus disconnects himself from romantic relationships. He may even disconnect himself from all human relationships due to his lack of appetite for life. He is the eternal dreamer who does not even attempt to fulfill his romantic desires.

The Oedipal Child in the PUA world
The warmness and spirituality of the Oedipal Child is perfect for building comfort with women.

The main thing to be aware of are the dangers of being stuck in either of the Oedipal Child's polarities. The inability of the Mama's Boy to ever be satisfied with a woman means he will never be able to fully appreciate a woman or form a meaningful romantic relationship. In addition his obsession with masturbation and pornography may lead to Erectile Dysfunction. The Dreamer's lack of initiative means he will forever be a dreamer. The ultimate AFC.

These don't seem balanced; just an observation. Are these supposed to be the personality groups that men can be categorized into? Nonetheless, interesting.

THE HERO
The Hero is the immature archetype that gives rise to the mature energy of the Warrior. It is the most advanced form of boy energy, which makes sense since it is usually the last to surface. Nevertheless it is still immature as we shall see, and must eventually be completely transcended by the powerful Warrior.

The Hero vs the Warrior
The Hero acts more in order to impress others and claim his superiority, as opposed to the Warrior who acts from a sense of duty, whether it comes from within or without.

The man living the Hero's aggressive polarity wants all the recognition because ultimately he is fighting for the sake of his own ego, nothing more. He also believes he is invulnerable and will charge ahead without much thought. The Warrior, on the other hand, knows his limits and will charge ahead if he knows he can win; otherwise he will be more strategic or simply hold back.

The man living the Hero's passive polarity will not stand up for himself or others; the Warrior always will.

Positive qualities of the Hero
  • Going head-to-head with one's limitations. External yes, but ultimately internal.
  • Beginning to break from boyhood and entering manhood.
The shadow of the Hero
See "The Hero vs the Warrior" above.

The Hero in the PUA world
Accessing the archetype of the Hero can be useful in pickup in the sense that it will help you to take charge of situations without overthinking them. A decisive man is an attractive man. As you practice this skill you will begin to get a feel for what works and feels right to you, and what doesn't. This should streamline your way of thinking so that your decisions gradually begin to make more sense and be in congruence with who you are. When you've mastered this skill, you will be closer to transcending the Hero and accessing the powers of the Warrior.
