Hey dude, i love colognes..
There are two things to consider when picking a scent

1. A cologne will smell different on you than anyone else because it mixes individually with the natural pheremones on ur skin.. most blokes are stuck wearing the same cologne that their aunty gave them for christmas and it doesnt suite them at all
2. It is essential to wear a cologne that suites the occasion and how you feel.. i.e - the mood of the day/night

having said that, here are some recommendations of good colognes

Light, refreshing, summer (i.e - beach) -- 'Cool Water' by 'Davidoff'

Dark, thoughtful and complex, unique (i.e - when u want to come off as mysterious) -- 'The Beat' by 'Burberry'

Citrusy, exotic, holiday scent -- 'Allure sport' by 'Chanel' (theres two allure sports, its the see through one, be careful here - its a very individual scent and might not sutie)

Professional, Confident, Business-like -- 'Platinum Egoiste' by 'Chanel' (for the older guy)

Again its up to you fellas, go out there and smell them and write down what it brings to mind.. or what i did was to make a list of the five types of impressions i wanted to make and then over months of testing found five that suited me..

peace

Polo Black and Diesel are my two favorite. I get plenty of compliments on them both and women tend to be obsessed.

depends on your personality/individual scent, ask the girls selling it they moght help, here is general advice;

Firstly, never go to strong, you dont wanna smell like chemicals or be smelt a mile away.

For clubs - Something with musk (attracts women), I recommend Calvin Klein MAN, its kinda old donno if u can still buy it but its one of my favourites

Day/beach/summer or hot weather - light, fruity smell, I recommend acqua di gio by giorgio armani

For bars and dates - something that is different and will leave an impression - try diesel fuel for life or gucci pour homme sport. Also these are good general situation colognes, just dont overdo it since they are quite strong so maybe not the best thing for a job interview...

i experiment a lot with this what types of cologne attract and repel women and i do ask girls (usually strippers and hot hired guns that work in the shop) why they work heres ones to stick to some choices will be youve never heard of and some will be expensive:
jean paul gaultier le male (the original le male)
jean paul gaulter2
theirry mugler a*men
gucci by gucci
ysl l'homme
ysl l'homme la nuit
baldessarini strictly private
ralph lauren big pony 2 (the red one)
tom ford grey vetiver
tom ford tobacco vanille
chanel allure edition blanche
carolina herrera 212 sexy (red bottle)
issey miyake (this is a recommendation from kezia noble)
givenchy play

heres some to avoid they're ok just not for pickup:
marc jacobs bang (too peppery)
aramis (too old fashioned and way too strong)
diesel for life (smells like petrol)

The cologne that works well on me is Chanel Homme de Sport. It's not an overpowering sent but it is amazing, so if a girl comments on it she's probably pretty close, which to me is a clear IOI.

Burberry - Brit/London - I personally think girls lovelove this.

Polo - Black on black - Very Bro. Good for Frat Parties, but everyone is too.

Curve - Black - Cheap. But it's good if your going around school.

Gucci - Gucci - I was daysarging at the mall and tried this in the samples.

Paco rabanne, ultraviolet - personally my favourite smell, i've found that when you wear your favourite you're more comfortable in yourself and not worrying about what you smell like.
Abercrombie & fitch, fierce - not sure if it's the same outside of the UK but a&f has become massive and is a must have with only one store in England. The thing is though even with only one store everyone knows the smell and girls always ask if you're wearing it, have a deep smell and go 'mmmm'. Surely there must be some transference of brand perception onto the wearer but I'll leave that to the More advanced people in the forum to discuss as I'm new to this!

Hope this helps!

This is a fragment from the GameBoy's Ultimate Guide to Cologne:

Just a few tips:

How to Apply:
Aside from reacting to your bodies own chemicals (pheromones and oils), cologne react to heat. Body-heat specifically. When applying; you want to target the areas of your body that product the most heat and are exposed to air. You want to trigger and release the scent in the most effective ways.

So, where are these magical locations?
-Wrists
-Neck
-Arm pits
-Behind the ears
-Chest (if exposed)
In that order. You can also spray the back of your knees and ‘Big-Ben’ (as one forum member referred to it) if you like, but the effect will be largely lost.

*Note: Do not spray cologne behind your ears – it will come off way too strong.
Instead; spray your wrists/the palm of one hand at close range – then swipe your finger in it and apply behind ears.

Tips:
-Do not apply cologne to wet skin. The cologne will dissipate incredibly fast and you will be left with a minor residue on your skin. (A residue that doesn’t smell that good at close range.)
-Do not rub your wrists together after you spray them. The friction and heat will increase the cologne’s breakdown in a bad way.
-If you are layering scents (applying more than one cologne to create a custom or richer scent) wait several seconds from the time you apply the first cologne to apply the second.. This will allow the first scent to ‘settle’ and bond with your skin before introducing the second.
-Rotate you cologne. Be that adventurous guy who’s got it all-together. You’re stylish, classy and refined. You have different colognes to match the occasion/outfit/mood. Have a variety and wear them to match. Women (and everyone else) will take note. It’s one of those incredibly sexy/confident/thoughtful details that stands out for being subtle.

Just got the Ralph Lauren Polo Big Pony Green #3 cologne for Christmas and it has a nice scent to it. I don't like using colognes that are overpowering (unless you smell like a diaper full of Indian food) but this one has just the right amount of strength for me. I'd recommend it.
