I have a buddy who is not HUGE, but has some extrra baggage...Little bigger than Joe D from TPUA. I have tried to go with the casual look when building his avatar, but nothing seems to work.

Any ideas for how to get my man properly decked?

I think you said it in your post. Dress him up like Joe D. I liked his look on the show and I think it really boosted his confidence cuz he knew he looked suave and classy. That is unless by casual you mean you dressed him like Joe D already. If that's the case I dunno lol

i'm in the same boat... I'm carrying a few extra pounds, so I can't shop in the H&Ms of the world...

note this advise is based on what is in the greater NYC area, most of these places/brands might be available online, so look and see what works for you.

if money is an issue, you can do it 'on the cheap' at stores like Daffy's, Marshall's TJ Maxx, etc will have a few nice pieces possibly in the right size.

if money isn't an issue, but you don't want to spend a TON, a lot of the 'urban' clothing stores such as Against All Odds, Stylz, etc will have some larger sizes in brands like Parish, Marc Ecko, Avirex, Johnny Blaze...

if money is really no issue, Rochster Big and Tall has some great clothes from real designers like Calvin Klein, Burberry, Joseph Aboud, Kenneth Cole, etc. (Casual Male XL and He-Man Big and Tall carry bigger clothes, but it looks Kmart/Wal-Mart fashion) . The clothes here might not be overly peacock worthy, but as a bigger guy, having a pair of jeans that looks good and fits you well is enough... i've found that wearing clothes that LOOK good on you adds a level of confidence that acts in much the same way... http://www.rochesterclothing.com/store/en_US/index.jsp

and if money is TRULY no object, Rochester stores (not online) will custom make suits and shirts for you, and you can make them in any style/color, etc to create your own look.

i alternate between a nice looking suit with a flashy t-shirt, nice jeans, nice shirt, sport jacket and the occasional over-the-top outfit...

Yeah, the Joe D look didn't quite fit him.

For night game and club game you could go for the 'boss' look as in mob boss/pimp etc I hate to use sterotypes but big men have often been sterotyped as ALPHA males in/on movies/tele and just general life. Use this to your advantage.

Fashionwise
Stick to vertical stripes and wider ties and darker colours.

I agree with everything said but also:

DO not wear things that are TOO baggy! It may seem like a good idea but it ISN'T!

Don't do it. Wear things that fit properly. Too baggy is worst that too tight. You heard me! I used to wear baggy clothes all the time and i am a bigger guy but then I started asking people and talking to people and found out that you shouldn't do that.

People not only notice that your a big guy but they also notice that your trying to hide it. That is a double negative right off the bat.

Yeah, baggy clothes can make you look like you're trying to hide that you're overweight, or that you don't have very much style. Stuff that fits properly (not too tight or too loose) is the way to go cause then you look well put together.

I could be wrong here, but you might be dressing him in stuff he doesn't
like. Did he like the Joe D look before dressing like him?

I know it sounds counter-intuitive, since he asked for your help, but in the
end he has to like what he wears.

Let him go through some magazines and watch some television/movies
and point out some stuff that catches his eye. Then try and match it.

Whatever he likes to wear, it may just be an issue of how well the clothes
fit him or just refining his current style.

dress him like a club owner.
