Looking good on a budget is obtainable, but only if you are familiar with the fashion secrets of well-dressed women. Before you shop this season’s trends and style favorites, use these tips to look like a million bucks without spending your entire salary.

1 Shop off-price retailers like TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Ross and Loehmann’s. Overstocked merchandise runs rampant at these designer department store clearinghouses. The store buyers select merchandise that is on trend and current with what you’ll find in the fashion magazines. Expect to find luxurious items and ready-to-wear for up to 50 percent off retail price.

2 Splurge on outerwear, classic handbags and shoes. Coats, shoes and handbags are the first thing anyone notices on a woman. Spend your cash on these items. Buy items that will last for more than one season. Invest in classic black and brown for handbags and shoes. Purchase brightly colored coats and jackets in vibrant colors to add a little drama to your wardrobe.

3 Don’t be seduced by sale prices. As you shop for new items to add to your wardrobe, beware of the 50 percent off tag. Just because the item is on sale doesn’t mean that you should buy it. Ask yourself if you would pay full price for the item. If the answer is yes, then you are free to buy the fashionable piece at a reduced price.

4 Save money on trendy items. Dressing well on a budget requires a working knowledge of what wardrobe basics to purchase each season to complement your lifestyle. Save on the leopard bag and the patent leather belt that you see plastered on the cover of every magazine. Instead of buying a $1,300 bag at Neiman Marcus, purchase its designer-inspired cousin at H&M or Forever 21 for less.

5 Shop thrift stores and estate sales for classic wardrobe pieces from yesteryear. Thrift stores and high-end garage sales sell more than your grandmother’s old doilies and chipped coffee cups. Real fashion gems for women desiring to dress well on a budget are hidden between the flannel shirts and crocheted bed spreads. Add a touch of glamor and nostalgia to your existing wardrobe with cashmere coats, fur collars and vintage silk scarves and handbags found at thrift stores.

6 Shop consignment stores in wealthy neighborhoods. When wealthy fashionistas tire of last season’s fabulous frocks, they often unload them at consignment stores. Because these designer-obsessed ladies can’t stand to be seen twice in the same outfit, you can add their gently worn clothes to your wardrobe. Prices in consignment stores are filled with designer pieces for budget-conscious shoppers looking to dress well on a budget.

Tips & Warnings

Look for ways to lower your weekly dry cleaning bills. Use an at-home product like Dryel to launder your clothes.

Purchase your beauty items at drugstores and large retailers to add more pennies to your clothing budget.

Hey

This is good advice! The more I shop lately I DO find out as you say its not really about

how expensive the item is....its more about how well you take care of your

clothing in the end!

However I have been finding ways to expand my shopping for wardrobes

and been trying to make it more creative and less heavy on the budget

then just splurging on high ticket items!

Anyways great post thank you for the advice!
