Alright, so I was chilling at a party when I decided to go sit next to an HB 9, I ran a simple opinion opener and then I qualified her. She started pointing her body language towards me but her arms were folded. I was wondering, would it be better to mirror her body language at that point to build rapport? Or would it be better to just point my body language towards her?? Thanks, Apple |

Don't mirror a closed frame. Crossed arms is as closed off as it gets. |

Never mirror a closed frame. There is a “GO FIRST” concept that applies heavily to pick up, NLP, hypnosis, and many other areas of your life. It states that if you want someone to feel a certain way, you first have to feel that way yourself. So if you copy her closed off body language, your brain will automatically start convincing yourself that you should be thinking in a closed off mentality. If you want her to open up, YOU HAVE TO OPEN UP YOURSELF FIRST. If you open up first and show comfort, then she will be inclined to do the same. Right on. Agree with this. Mirror only positive body language, not negative one as it'll just reinforce your and her negative state.If you want her to open up, YOU HAVE TO OPEN UP YOURSELF FIRST. Having said that, some women just have their defenses up automatically, so you may need to give it a bit more time to open her up. Or your opener or the way you executed the opener was wrong and made her defensive. What exactly did you ask? |

Experts disagree on this some say mirror everything and others say only mirror open movements. There really doe not seem to be a right or wrong way just opinions and preferences. First of all body language is NOT universal. A woman may cross her arms or legs because she it is comfortable or shes chilly or maybe its just her natural posture. Body language is a wild card and the most it usually gives is an educated guess. As to weather or not to mirror her I say absolutely!! Let me explain to your options. You could mirror her closed body language a maybe establish some rapport, then lead her by opening your own body language. If rapport is present there is a good change that she will open up. Another option is to mirror other things about her (breathing, facial expression, eye contact, voice volume, tone, tempo even her personality). |
