Post subject:  Ex-Girlfriend just gave back the birthday present I gave her

Well, the only thing I ever got her was a birthday present. It was a necklace that I got pretty cheap because I was family friends with the store owner. Anyway, she decided that after not talking to me for about 3 weeks after I broke up with her, our conversation went something like this:

Her: I have something to give you.
Me: I don't want anything.
Her: No its important.
Me: What is it?
Her: - (Hands me the necklace in its box.)
Me: No seriously I don't want this. Take it. Give it to someone else.
(I go to give it back, she shakes her head, runs off crying.)

What the hell am I supposed to do now? The way she gave it back just makes me feel like it was all pointless. And it's not a matter of me "getting over it," because I'm already over her. It's just hard because we share the same friends in our social circle, so its not if I can just "avoid contact". And I don't exactly want to give her back the birthday present she gave me. That just seems childish and immature to me. I'd rather just use it up till it finishes or throw it out (cologne)

But I don't know. I just felt angry when she gave it back. I didn't show it, and I think I handled myself OK. But still, it wasn't exactly a good end to the day, I'll tell you that now.

I guess I don't exactly have a question, but I appreciate anyone's opinions on this matter.

You can just give it to your next girlfriend, recycling gifts saves money

If you wanted her to keep it, you should have acted excited when she gave it to you. Say something like "Awesome, I was hoping to get this back, could you help me put it on?" Then when she has a shocked expression, you say "I'm just playing, you know it's rude to give a gift back to the the person who gave it to you right?" and then shove it back into her hands and walk away. A mixture of reverse psychology and confusion go along way.

LOL!!! That's genius!
Man I wish I knew that one; I would have used it for sure!

Don't give the present back to her. That'd be immature.

She handled it in a reasonably immature way. She probably gave back the present because there were some memories associated with it.

For the sake of your social circle don't see her as an ex, treat her as a friend, eventually she might grow up and treat you like a friend and maybe apologize.

She handles her way, you handle it your way.

fuck the bitch.

if she's too immature (guessing by her actions, i'd say about 12 years old?) too appreciate and accept a gift graciously and has to act like an absolute retard by giving it back...

i would have taken it and laughed in her face for her being retarded and just shook my head in disgust and walked away.

This was one of the reasons I broke up with her. Yes, she was immature. The things she did, the choices she made, her reasons behind everything, it's almost like she was a child; like you said. And I didn't realize it till the end.

Yeah you guys are all right. Cheers for the advice.

maybe text her and let her know you pawned it for $20 and got a really good pizza. idk. who the fuck gives back birthday presents? it's not like it was an engagement ring, lol. it was just a gift. i'm curious, btw, how old was this girl? i'd be shocked if she was a day over 18.

LOL exactly. And once again, you're right. She only turned 18 a few months ago. Still behaves like a 12 year old though.

I'm surprised she wouldn't have given that back. Any idea what she did with it? Kept it or sold it?
