Post subject:  Greetings from Profcurious

Greetings everyone:

I've been spending the last four years learning about PU through trial and error in the field on my own loosely using the field methods and knowledge I've picked up as a graduate student and now professor of sociology (with a background in social psychology). I say "loosely" because I never sat down and actually systematized my existing knowledge into a method like others in the community.

About a year ago, on a lazy weekend afternoon, I was flipping through channels on the TV when I came across the second episode of the Pick-up Artist (it turned out that VH-1 was showing all episodes back to back that day). I was immediately drawn in because Mystery was relying on social psychological techniques to teach ordinary guys the art of pick-up.

Initially, I thought the episode might be useful as a teaching tool in some of my courses (I stress to my students that sociology and psychology should be studied so that the principles can be applied in the real world rather than simply memorizing the information to pass a test and then forgetting it).

Eventually I began to see that not only was he using techniques that one can find in the literature, but that he had synthesized this existing knowledge and field tested approaches to systematically construct an actual method of pick-up. Needless to say, I was impressed and thought to myself “this is what I should have been doing all along.” I had just started dating a girl around this time so I wasn’t really in a position to apply the methods and so I largely forgot about it.

Anyway, about a month ago we broke up and I happened to come across a description of Neil Strauss’ The Game which I quickly went out and purchased. It was through this book that I learned that there was an underground community of pick-up artists that had existed right under my nose the whole time I was trying to apply what I knew to pick-up and who were generating and refining techniques “in the field” like social anthropologists and sociologists.

Obviously, I should have done better research (pretty embarrassing for an academic who tells his students that a good research project begins with a solid review of the existing research)! I had come across Ross Jeffries book a few years ago but I failed to realize that he was part of an existing community. I became intrigued and set out to learn more…

Since then, I’ve finished The Game along with the The Mystery Method and The Art of Mingling. I’ve also drawn up a reading list based on suggestions from those in the community (which I would be happy to share with you if you email me) and am making my way through that now. I’ve also started to implement the techniques from The Game and The Mystery Method while in the field these past few weeks. So far so good. Finally, I’ve turned a few of my friends onto the books so that we can better work together (again, so far so good).

I’ve got much to learn but I’m really looking forward to sharing the journey with you all…
